Abstract
Background: Breakfast is commonly the most important meal of the day but, sadly some university students do not consume it in the morning due to time pressure, poor lifestyle habits and preferences. This neglect may negatively impact their physical, emotional and academic capabilities. The objective of this study is to find the connection between a university student’s practice of having breakfast and their academic performance as well as their emotional and physical health. Method: 104 undergrad students from various Bangladeshi universities were surveyed via structured questionnaires to determine relationships between breakfast habits, health, well-being and academic performance through statistical analysis. Results: The analysis showed variability in breakfast habits with 30.8% of students rarely or never eating breakfast. The key reason for skipping meals among the students was time constraints (67.3%). Skipping breakfast is the main cause of fatigue (64.5%) and low energy levels (39.4%). However, daily breakfast positively impacts cognitive performance (43.3%) and focus during morning activities (25%). Regularity in breakfast was found to be negatively correlated with stress levels, as students who didn't have breakfast were more stressed. Conclusion: The study highlights the need to address the lack of breakfast among students to improve their health and academic performance by removing time constraints and promoting appealing breakfast consumption through education and interventions.
