American International University - Bangladesh (AIUB) FOOTPRINT
Introduction
The American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), situated in the dynamic urban landscape of Dhaka, is a forward-thinking institution committed to integrating sustainability into its academic and operational frameworks. Recognizing the pressing challenges of climate change and the importance of environmental stewardship, AIUB has undertaken a strategic initiative to assess, monitor, and reduce its carbon footprint.
This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the university's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, covering the period from 2022 to the projected outlook for 2024. It follows internationally recognized standards and categorizes emissions into three scopes:
- Scope 1: Direct emissions from university-owned sources such as vehicles and fuel combustion.
- Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity.
- Scope 3: Other indirect emissions, including waste generation, student and staff commuting, and procurement-related activities.
Through this carbon footprint assessment, AIUB demonstrates its alignment with Bangladesh’s national environmental goals and global sustainability frameworks such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The findings of this report serve as a baseline for improvement and support informed decision-making aimed at achieving long-term environmental sustainability and institutional resilience. AIUB’s efforts reaffirm its role as a leader in green campus transformation in the region.

Conclusion
The American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) has demonstrated remarkable progress in advancing its environmental sustainability agenda. The university's proactive approach to assessing and mitigating its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions between 2022 and the projected figures for 2024 underscores its commitment to responsible and forward-looking campus operations.
Key initiatives—such as the transition toward renewable and low-emission energy sources, implementation of energy-efficient infrastructure, and the promotion of sustainable behaviors within the university community—have yielded measurable environmental benefits. These actions have resulted in a consistent decline in total and per capita GHG emissions, affirming AIUB’s strategic direction and operational effectiveness in addressing climate-related challenges.
Beyond quantitative reductions, AIUB has cultivated a culture of environmental awareness and accountability among its students, faculty, and administrative personnel. This cultural shift reinforces the university’s role as a model of institutional sustainability in higher education across Bangladesh and the broader South Asian region.
Looking ahead, AIUB is well-positioned to further enhance its sustainability impact through continuous improvement, stakeholder engagement, and the integration of green principles in all aspects of university planning and governance. These ongoing efforts solidify its status as a regional leader in environmental responsibility and as an active contributor to global sustainability goals.
