American International University–Bangladesh (AIUB) is committed to integrating sustainability into teaching and learning, research and innovation, campus operations, institutional planning, and community engagement. The AIUB Sustainability Policy establishes a university-wide framework for environmental protection, social well-being, economic resilience, and responsible governance. It aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development framework, and relevant national priorities of Bangladesh.
The policy promotes sustainability education across academic programmes, interdisciplinary research, and practical learning that addresses environmental and societal challenges. It encourages students, faculty, and staff to contribute through academic projects, innovation, volunteering, awareness programmes, and partnerships with communities, industry, government agencies, and other institutions. Equity, inclusion, accessibility, ethical conduct, and responsible citizenship guide these activities.
Campus priorities include efficient use of energy and water; waste reduction, segregation, reuse, and recycling; responsible management of electronic and hazardous waste; reduced paper consumption through digital processes; sustainable procurement; and protection of campus greenery and biodiversity. Renewable energy, sustainable transportation, and resource-efficient infrastructure will be pursued where feasible.
The policy provides for a Sustainability Committee to coordinate implementation, support collaboration across academic and administrative units, monitor performance, and report progress to University leadership. Implementation will proceed through institutional action plans, measurable targets, relevant indicators, and evidence-based assessment. Progress will be reported annually through an AIUB Sustainability Report or an equivalent institutional reporting mechanism. The policy will be reviewed at least once every three years, or earlier when necessary, to support accountability, continued relevance, and continuous improvement.
