The Department of Social Science of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) successfully hosted an inspiring speech competition titled “Emerging Issues in a Rapidly Changing World” on Thursday, January 7, 2026, for students in the Basics in Social Science and Foundations of Sociology courses. The event revolved around a thought-provoking theme that encouraged participants to critically engage with contemporary social challenges.
The program was inaugurated jointly by Professor Dr. Anwar Hossain, Advisor and Dean-in-Charge of the Faculty of Business Administration (FBA), and Professor Dr. Tazul Islam, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). Their presence inspired the students a lot.
Under the guidance of five dedicated faculty members, students from eleven sections of the Social Science courses prepared and presented speeches addressing diverse emerging social issues. From each section, three outstanding speakers were selected by the respective course teachers. In the final round, a total of 33 speakers competed, among whom five participants were awarded as Best Speakers by a panel of respected judges. All participants received certificates in recognition of their enthusiastic participation.
The competition was evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges from three different departments of FASS: Dr. Faria Sultana, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Economics; Mohammed Niaz Majumdar, Senior Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication; and Shihab Saqib, Assistant Professor, Department of English. The speech competition encouraged students to articulate thoughtful and socially relevant issues through persuasive speeches, fostering both sociological insight and public speaking competence.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Buddha Dev Biswas, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Social Science, who expressed his sincere gratitude to all the faculty members, judges, participating students, and management for their cordial support. The event was organized and anchored by Ms. Shaira Matin, Senior Assistant Professor of the Department of Social Science, and the Event Organizer. All the faculty members of the Social Science Department: Dr. Arifatul Kibria, Dr. Ashrafuzzaman, Dr. Rowshon Ara Romke, Shaira Matin, Md. Monir Hossain and Tasnova Zerin Ulfat were present at the event. Overall, the initiative fostered an enriching environment that promoted learning, critical thinking, creativity, and active student engagement in understanding and responding to the pressing challenges of contemporary society.
