A class studying the course “Arts and Aesthetics”, Department of Media and Mass Communication (MMC) of the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), under the guidance of Mr. Niaz Majumdar, (the course teacher) visited Panam City, Sonargaon on 14th November 2019.
A getaway to this ancient city would provide all the students a scope to spend the designated day immersing themselves in its rich culture and heritage; to get a closer look at the marvelous forms of architecture.
Sonargaon is a historic city in central Bangladesh. It is one of the old capitals of the historic region of Bengal and was an administrative center of Eastern Bengal. It was also a port and trading center. During British colonial rule, merchants built many Indo-Saracenic townhouses in the Panam neighborhood. Sonargaon was central to the muslin trade in Bengal.
Panam city is an attractive attraction in Bangladesh for the old architectures which is located in Sonargaon of Narayanganj. This city carries the memory of Isa Khan who was one of the Baro-Bhuyans (one of the ruler of Bengal). That time this small village was known as the capital of Isa Khan. The capital existed during the 15th century and few of its memories are still remaining (such as the Panamnagar bridge). We are losing the antiquities of this area day by day. It is better to visit this Panam city before it fades out and gets lost in time. This place is also known as the lost city of Sonargaon.
Despite being in ruins, the unique and fine architectural details stood out in every structure. Local artistry boasted its remarkable creation through the usage of terracotta and red, blue, white, black mosaic work. There were various houses beautifully situated at a distance from a number of ponds; each of which diffused a sense of tranquility.
After the lunch bus took students to Lalbagh Fort. They spent a significant amount of time pondering over Pari Bibi’s mausoleum.
