Course Description (Core Courses)

Course Code: MPH-5011 Basic Epidemiology

Basic Epidemiology introduces the epidemiology and biostatistics concepts as applied to public health problems. Emphasis is placed on the principles and methods of epidemiologic investigation, appropriate summaries and displays of data, and the use of classical statistical approaches to describe the health of populations.

Course Code: MPH -5012 Introduction to Biostatistics

This is an advanced study course intended for students with a strong grasp of quantitative methods. This course is intended for students with an understanding of linear regression models and generalized linear models. Students require an understanding of matrix algebra and calculus. The aim is to enable students to understand, apply and interpret the results of a range of statistical methods for the design and analysis of data on Public Health related studies.

Course Code: MPH – 5013 Introduction to Public Health Nutrition

The course will develop the understanding of public health nutrition with special emphasis on the significance of developing sustainable, nutritious and health population through supplying the health food for all. The course will focus on health equities, social determinants of health and their impact of nutritional health and well-being. The influences of climate change, the pattern of globalization and urbanization, the social, cultural and environmental factors that have impact on the food choices, dietary habits and food consumption habits will be also focused in this course. The students will learn about developing the nutritional intervention programs and health policies based on nutrition in this course.

Course Code: MPH – 5014 Population Dynamics and Environment

Demography is the scientific study of characteristics and dynamics pertaining to the human population. The characteristics encompasses by this study include size, growth rate, density, vital statistics, and distribution of a specified population. Demography requires the study of specific information that may be gathered from a population census or vital statistics records. People who study and record this information are referred to as demographers. Demographers must know both how to scientifically obtain information and how to interpret it.

Course Code: MPH -5015 Research Methodology in Public Health

This course designed to prepare MPH students for skills needed to undertake a dissertation. Students are expected to begin this course with a defined dissertation research topic, a draft research question, a hypothesis (for quantitative research designs), a supporting literature review, and ideas about appropriate methods. This course will explore the next steps of the research process, to further develop methods for conducting the research. This will include refining the research question, what specific methods are appropriate, how to implement the chosen method, how to manage and organize data and how to present the data results. Primary data collection methods to be covered will include questionnaires/surveys, focus groups and key informant interviews.

Course Code: MPH – 5021 Health Economics

Health economics is the study of how resources are allocated to and within health economy. Upon completion of this course students should be able to apply the tools and techniques of economics into health sector. Several examples will be introduced in this course to illustrate economic analysis of health care issues. The magnitude and importance of health sector will be demonstrated in this course. Various measures of size and growth will be introduced to establish the relevance of the health economy to both individual and national policy concerns. The students will be able to discuss historical trends that have led to the increasing use of economic evaluation being applied to the health care system. It will help students to discuss present day market realities that give increasing importance to health economics research.

Course Code: MPH – 5023 Public Health Education Rights and Ethics

This course is focused on the understanding of Public Health Education that is a prerequisite of sustainable healthy nation, the differences between health education and health promotion, the history, theories and models of the health promotion and education, the strategies and skills for different Health promotion intervention programs. Students will learn different theories so that they can apply them in different health promotion interventions. In addition, the ethics and rights in public health is an essential part which is also covered in this course.

Course Code: MPH – 5024 Application of Biomedical Engineering in Public Health

This module focuses on the study the fundamentals of the design, construction and clinical testing of biomedical electronics and instrumentation for acquisition of bio-signals from the body. The basic scientific principles underlying modern clinical measurement systems will be studied, including sensors, signal conditioning, calibration, data acquisition, analogue-to digital conversion and signal processing. Key clinical equipment will be studied in detail, including ECG, patient monitoring, pulse oximetry, laser Doppler systems etc.

Course Code: MPH – 5025 Reproductive and Sexual Health

The purpose of this course is to examine reproductive health issues, programs, services, and policies in developed and developing countries. The course content will emphasize social, economic, environmental, behavioral, and political factors that affect family planning, reproductive health, fertility, and pregnancy outcome. The course will have three areas of focus: (1) interventions and programs to improve reproductive health; (2) the measurement and interpretation of reproductive indices (within nations and globally); and (3) policies that affect reproductive health (with an emphasis on global policies and funding).

Course Code: MPH – 5026 Global Health and Emerging Diseases Pattern

This course will examine many of the current issues facing global health, while simultaneously developing the technical knowledge and skills necessary to undertake work in global health. Based on the top threats to global health identified by WHO, this course will incorporate lectures, group work and discussions and reading various publications to know the key understanding of Global Health.

Course Code: MPH – 5027 Health care Project Planning and Financing

At the end of the course the students will be able to develop a solid understanding of

different steps of developing an outstanding project proposal which will be able to draw attention of different stakeholders specially of those of donors to implement the project for a specified duration to achieve the set targets and goals.

Course Code: MPH – 5028 Capstone Research Project: (3 credits)

After the completion of the core courses, the students will use the knowledge of Basic epidemiology, Research methodology in Public Health and Introduction to Biostatistics and develop a research proposal for the project. They will collect data from required study location, perform analysis of data and present their research findings in final defense. They have to submit their final result report after getting approval from their respective supervisors and external examiners.
