On Thursday, January 9, 2025, students of Design Studio III from the Department of Architecture visited the vacation house named Rain Forest Farm and Resort Located in Gazipur Hatiabo. This trip had the intention to experience contemporary practices on Residential architecture in Bangladesh by exploring formal expression, spatial quality, and structural solution of the building. The study trip was conducted by Dr. Masum Iqbal, Ajmeri Nusrat Shoma, Md Sariful Islam, Tabassum Zarin and, Alvi Md. Ragib Nihal Khan.
The spectacular vacation house was built in 2016, designed by the principal architect Mahtab Hossain along with Architect Mehedi Amin and Architect B. M Anisur Rahman from the Architecture office MW3. The concept behind the project is to escape in serenity from the Chaotic world of Dhaka to the natural beauty in Gazipur, Hatiabo. During the site visit the students and faculty experienced how a building mass evolves with the placement of a courtyard in the center encompassed by streaming water. The water body connects the built spaces with paves and steps acting as interfaces for the user’s walking experience over water, surrounded by green on the offset.
Upon entering the interior, a grand formal living space on the ground floor unveils itself with a double-height space. The dining area offers a spectacular panorama of the internal courtyard, strategically positioned to open to all-encompassing views of a designed water body. Within the serene embrace of Hatiabo area, this architectural expression provides a tranquil haven for the client’s family and guests with careful attention to detail in materials and design. Moreover, the house gracefully integrates with the natural environment, offering a great understanding for the students and faculties as well.
The support of the principal Architect Mahtab Hossain and Architect Mehedi Amin from MW3, Head of the Architecture Department M. Arefeen Ibrahim and AIUB Authority made this tour a successful one. This tour made the faculties and students deeply motivated to see similar architecture sites in future.
