The American International University–Bangladesh (AIUB) successfully organized AIUB Sustainable Futures 2026, a vibrant two-day program held on 24 and 25 August 2026 at the AIUB Campus. Guided by the powerful theme “Be the Change,” the event brought together distinguished guests, partners, faculty members, students, volunteers, and members of the AIUB community to celebrate ideas, inspire action, and strengthen collective commitment towards a more sustainable future.

The two-day event was coordinated by the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (AIUB-IQAC) in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs (OSA). AIUB Sustainable Futures 2026 was proudly organized with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Bangladesh as the Knowledge Partner and Krishi Shwapno as the Sustainability Partner. Through a diverse range of activities, AIUB Sustainable Futures 2026 created an opportunity for participants to engage in sustainability in meaningful, creative, practical, and enjoyable ways.

An Inspiring Beginning: The Opening Ceremony

The first day of AIUB Sustainable Futures 2026 began with a colorful and inspiring opening ceremony. Welcoming the distinguished guests, faculty members, colleagues, and students, the program set the tone for two days dedicated to learning, creativity, innovation, collaboration, and action.

In the Welcome Note, Prof. Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna, Member, Board of Trustees, AIUB, formally welcomed everyone to the program and inaugurated the journey towards two meaningful days of reflection and action. This was followed by an address from Dr. Saiful Islam, Vice Chancellor, American International University–Bangladesh. In his address, he emphasized the important role that education and young people can play in shaping a more responsible and sustainable future. Following the opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Manzur H. Khan, Proctor and Director, Office of Student Affairs, AIUB, addressed the students, appreciating their dedication and hard work in preparing for the event.

The event was further enriched by the presence of Mrs. Prawma Tapashi Khan, FCCA, Country Head, ACCA Bangladesh, who shared an important professional perspective on responsible business, sustainability, and the changing expectations of the global profession. The program also featured an address by Mr. Toufiq Hasan, Head of Education, British Council, who shared his thoughts on the role of education and skills development in creating meaningful opportunities for young people.

Adding an entrepreneurial perspective to the opening ceremony, Mr. Sayed Zubaer Hasan, Founder & CEO, Krishi Shwapno, spoke about innovation, entrepreneurship, and the possibilities that emerge when ideas are transformed into meaningful action.

The inaugural program also included the screening of “A Vision for Sustainable Futures – AIUB,” presenting AIUB's vision and commitment towards building a sustainable future. This was followed by the Sustainability Pledge, conducted by Prof. Dr. Farheen Hassan, SFHEA, Director, AIUB-IQAC, where participants came together to make a collective commitment towards sustainability. The pledge reminded everyone that sustainability is not limited to a statement or a single event but is a responsibility that must be carried into homes, workplaces, communities, and everyday lives.

The opening ceremony concluded with a joyful note with a Celebratory Cake Cutting, where the distinguished guests and members of the AIUB leadership came together to officially celebrate the beginning of AIUB Sustainable Futures 2026 and two days dedicated to ideas, action, collaboration, and change.

One of the highlights of the first day was “Planting for the Future,” where participants came together for a tree plantation activity, symbolizing AIUB's commitment to a greener and more sustainable future. This was followed by “Voices of Change: Flashmob & Student Performances,” where AIUB students delivered energetic performances featuring songs connected to sustainability. The AIUB Drama Club also presented an engaging and entertaining street drama focusing on the importance of keeping our neighborhoods clean. The interactive performance, filled with humor and wonderful acting, received tremendous appreciation and applause from the audience and continued to engage everyone even in the rain.

Learning the SDGs Through Games: The SDG Booth Experience

One of the major highlights of AIUB Sustainable Futures 2026 was the SDG Booth Experience, which transformed all 17 Sustainable Development Goals into a campus-wide journey of interactive learning, games, and teamwork. Students began their journey by collecting an SDG Passport and completing an SDG Logo Matching Game developed by AIUB-IQAC. They then visited 17 SDG booths across the campus, where each goal was represented through a simple and engaging activity—from budget management for SDG 1, price guessing for SDG 2, physical challenges for SDG 3, spelling for SDG 4, identifying gender bias for SDG 5, water conservation for SDG 6, renewable energy identification for SDG 7, career aspirations for SDG 8, innovative structure-building for SDG 9, and inequality-themed games for SDG 10, to smart-city concepts for SDG 11, responsible food choices for SDG 12, waste sorting for SDG 13, electronic fishing for SDG 14, tree protection for SDG 15, sustainability pledges for SDG 16, and teamwork challenges for SDG 17. After completing each activity, students collected a seal in their passports, and those completing all 17 SDGs became eligible for a Completion and Awareness Certificate. The booths generated tremendous enthusiasm across the campus, with students actively participating, learning, taking photographs, and enjoying the experience, making sustainability education both memorable and meaningful.

Alongside the SDG games, the two-day event featured the ESG, Sustainability Reporting & AI in Finance Seminar with ACCA Bangladesh, Sustainable Art & Upcycling Competition, Climate Entrepreneurship and Impact Startups session by Krishi Shwapno, Sustainability Innovation Challenge, Moot Court: Justice for a Sustainable Future, and Poster Competition. The event concluded on 25 August 2026 with a Closing Ceremony, Awards and Recognition, where Prof. Manzur H. Khan, Proctor and Director, Office of Student Affairs, and Prof. Dr. Farheen Hassan announced the winners of the Poster Competition and Sustainable Art & Upcycling Competition, followed by an energetic Sustainability Concert by the AIUB Performing Arts Club.

The success of the event was driven by strong student engagement, with 10 AIUB Changemakers and approximately 70 student volunteers supporting the SDG booths, activities, and campus decoration using recycled materials. Special appreciation goes to the AIUB Shomoy Club, AIUB Environment Club, AIUB Drama Club, and AIUB Performing Arts Club for their enthusiastic support and contribution. Through games, creativity, dialogue, competition, and celebration, AIUB Sustainable Futures 2026 demonstrated that sustainability is not simply something to learn, it is something to experience, practice, and act upon.
