AIUB SOCIAL WELFARE CLUB, ‘SHOMOY’: “STANDING WITH THE FLOOD-EFFECTED”

Being prone to coastal tides, monsoon rains, and poor infrastructure, Bangladesh floods have been inevitable for the longest in the rural remote areas of the country. Every year, hundreds of people lose their livelihood, their homes, and even the basics of survival: clean water and food. Although numerous different organizations come forward to help those effected to overcome the hardships of the flood, it is never nearly quite enough. Each and every bit of support is crucial to their sustenance, and it is to that cause that the AIUB Social Welfare Club, “Shomoy” has a fund-raising campaign every year to help the flood-effected.

This year, Bogra was one of the most severely affected areas in the country, with water levels rising of over 15 centimeters crippling around 3000 locals within a span of an entire month. As the situation worsened over time, many came forward with helping hands. But despite the help of various individuals and organizations, in times of such calamity, every bit counts. Keeping to their beliefs of coming together to develop the society, “Shomoy” Club ran a university-wide campaign to raise funds for the welfare of the flood-affected. With the help of the university management through the contributions of students, faculties, and administration alike, as well as local authorities, they provided relief to around 200 families on the 12th of August 2016 in the Shakula Chor of the Shariakandi Upazila.

Amidst the hardships of the flood and the general living conditions in such sand-bed landscapes, “Shomoy” Club members were humbled to be able to bring some semblance of respite to the families. AIUB is, without a doubt, proud of their students for making such genuine efforts every year to aid the people who battle through these adversities in our country, and strives to continue supporting such benevolent initiatives.
