Workshop on Food Security Strategies of the People Living in Haor Areas: Status and Prospect

The American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB)hosted the first of the second workshop on Food Security a research project undertaken by the university in tandem with the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST)located in Syhlet. The workshop had two major phases, the Inaugural Session and the Technical Session. The first session was chaired by the Honorable Vice Chancellor, Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna with Prof. Dr. Md. Saleh Uddin, the Honorable Vice Chancellor of SUST as the Chief Guest. The Workshop was also graced by Dr. Ciro Fiorillo, Chief Adviser, NFPCSP, FAO and Mr. Mirza Fazlul Karim, Director General, FPMU, Ministry of Food and Disaster Management as special guests. The guests and participants were warmly welcomed by Prof. Dr. Charles C. Villanueva, co-investigator and Director of ACRE of AIUB. This was followed by the messages of the Chief Guests, Special Guests and the Chair. All the speakers underscored  the importance and significance of the research project in view of the serious concern for food security of the people of Haor. The vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Dr. Md. Zakir Hossain, Co-investigator and Head, Department of Statistics, SUST. He conveyed sincerest thanks to the funding international organization such as FAO, EU, USAID and the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh,  the recipient of the study in terms of policies and recommendations to alleviate poverty of the people of Haor. He also expressed thanks to all the participants and most importantly, AIUB through the Vice Chancellor for chairing and hosting the workshop. The technical session was chaired by the Honorable Vice Chancellor of SUST. The Principal investigator, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Mizanul Haque Kazal presented in power pt. the draft Final Report. After the presentation, Dr. Marie Jo Cortijo, Socio-economist, NFPCSP Member gave the reaction and comments on the paper. The general discussion generated valuable observations, comments and suggestions on the report. All the feedbacks will be processed to enrich the report. Finally, the Chair shared his views and comments on the contents of the report. He also expressed his appreciation to the researchers, the data collectors and all those who were involved in the study. He also acknowledged the well organized workshop hosted by AIUB at the same time extended a warm invitation to the participants to the second workshop to be held in SUST.
