Engineering Student's Association of Bangladesh (ESAB) AIUB Unit Face organized an informative workshop entitled as "Workshop on basic concepts of MATLAB" at Room-266, Building-2, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm on 25th March, 2015. MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory) is a numerical computation environment and a fourth generation programming language developed by MathWorks. MATLAB is widely used in academic and research institutions as well as industrial enterprises. Thus in the Engineering sectors like Electrical and Electronic Engineering, it is highly likely to have the knowledge of the basic concepts of MATLAB. The seminar started with the national anthem, followed by a brief promo video, focusing on ESAB's mission, vision and activities. Dr. A.B.M Siddique Hossain (Professor and Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB) delivered the inaugural speech by emphasizing on the applications of MATLAB in today’s world. Mr. Rinku Basak (Head, Graduate Program, Department of EEE, AIUB) provided an informative speech and briefly discussed about the technical computing process and inner mechanism of MATLAB and the necessity of it in the future world. Later on, Mr. Mashrur H. Shurid (Development and Planning Secretary, ESAB) gave away an inspirational speech. The first session of the workshop started with speaker Ms. Tajbia Karim (Lecturer, Department of EEE, AIUB). She started the session by introducing MATLAB to the participants. She discussed about the basic syntax, general arithmetic and logical operation, plot specification and a variety of other basic necessities for the beginner. She also described matrix formation and manipulation and constructing functions using MATLAB. The second session was conducted by Ms. Tasnuva Tasneem (Lecturer, Department of EEE, AIUB), where she shared her in-depth knowledge about MATLAB. She shared her expertise on basic and advanced functions regarding image processing and briefly described the theory behind the formation of matrices in terms of image processing. The final session began with Ms. Tajbia Karim’s demonstration of “Basic implementation of filter”. She emphasized on using an efficient filter mechanism which was in this case a Band Pass filter. The session ended with a hands-on practical application of voice filter. Input voice signal from an audience was filtered using a Butterworth filter designed by Ms. Tajbia with MATLAB functions which received a great round of applause. Noise cancellation mechanism was briefly discussed and she encouraged the participants to try and design their own version of filter. At the end of the workshop session, Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan (Associate Professor & Head, Undergraduate Program, Department of EEE, AIUB) delivered a speech emphasizing on programming in today’s world. He also emphasized that to serve the nation with technology; engineering students need to learn programming. The workshop was also graced by the presence of Mr. Chowdhury Akram Hossain (Assistant Professor, Department of EEE & Special Assistant, OSA), Mr. Nafiz Ahmed Chisty (Assistant Professor & Special Assistant, Department of EEE, AIUB), Mr. Md. Saniat Rahman Zishan (Assistant Professor, Department of EEE & Special Assistant, OSA), Mr. Shahriar Hasan Shehab (Lecturer, Department of EEE, AIUB), Mr. Tawsif Ibne Alam (Lecturer, Department of EEE, AIUB), Ms. Shahreen Hassan (Lecturer, Department of EEE, AIUB), Ms. Sadiya Yasmin(Lecturer, Department of EEE, AIUB), and Ms. Sumaiya Umme Hani (Lecturer, Department of EEE, AIUB). At the end of the ceremony, in the presence of Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan and Mr. Md. Saniat Rahman Zishan certificates and souvenirs were handed to the speakers as a token of appreciation. Certificates were also distributed among the participants for their successful participation to the event by the honorable speakers.
