Webinar on “Advances in Modern Microwave Technology: Substrate-Integrated Waveguides, 3D Printing, and Innovative Materials”

On Thursday, 12th October 2023, IEEE AIUB Student Branch, in collaboration with the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society AIUB SB Chapter, successfully organized a webinar titled “Advances in Modern Microwave Technology: Substrate-Integrated Waveguides, 3D Printing, and Innovative Materials”. The purpose of this event was to highlight the importance of substrate-integrated waveguides, showcase the revolutionary impact of 3D printing in this domain, and emphasize the crucial role of creative materials in shaping the future.

The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abdul Mannan, Associate Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB; Advisor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch. He welcomed the attendees and spoke on the significance of Substrate-Integrated Waveguides, 3D Printing, and Innovative Materials in Modern Microwave Technology. Following that, Dr. Maurizio Bozzi, PhD, Professor at the University of Pavia, Italy; IEEE MTT-S President (GLOBAL) Elect-2023, and IEEE Fellow took the floor and expressed his gratitude to the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society AIUB SB Chapter for hosting the webinar. The speaker delved into various subjects, including traditional microwave technologies and printed circuit boards, offering an in-depth exploration of Internet of Things (IoT), which encompassed crucial IoT development factors. The presentation also covered metallic waveguides, microstrip lines, and System-on-Substrate (SOS). Next, a thorough discussion on Substrate Integrated Waveguides (SIW) followed, encompassing their advantages, applications, key components, miniature SIW structures, foldable variations, half-mode, and quarter-mode SIW cavities, filters, and innovative SIW component design. The talk continued with insights into Wilkinson-Type SIW Power dividers, homogeneous cavity designs, narrow-band, and broad-band filters, and partially air-filled SIW cavities and dividers.

The speaker also presented the structure and discussed the functionality of SIW cavity sensors. Furthermore, the presentation touched upon 3D-printed SIW structures, microfluidic sensors, and slab SIWs. Finally, the discussion expanded to encompass the production of textile-based SIWs, textile components, and textile antennas, as well as paper-based circuits, Ink-Jet printing, and milling techniques. The session concluded with a final speech expressing gratitude to IEEE AIUB Student Branch for the invitation, followed by a Q&A session. At the end, Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman, Pro Vice Chancellor, AIUB; Advisor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch provided the closing remarks where he discussed the uses and advantages of modern technology and the recent trend of modern technology while presenting the virtual token of appreciation to the speaker.

The major goal of this webinar was to enlighten participants about these important developments and help them comprehend their uses, consequences, and exciting new opportunities for microwave technology. The event highlights developments in microwave technology that are in line with SDG Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) as well as SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) using cutting-edge materials and 3D printing.

The webinar began at 07:00 PM and ended around 08:30 PM (Bangladesh Standard Time). A total of 90+

participants attended the webinar. Honorable faculty member Mr. Mohammad Khurshed Alam, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, was among the participants.
