The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award: Adventurous Journey to Nepal
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award: Adventurous Journey to Nepal
On September 28th 2009, the seven participants of the Duke of Edinburgh Award (DEA) of AIUB along with their Award Leader, Mr. A.K. Nazmul, embarked on an adventurous journey to Nepal. This was the first ever foreign adventurous journey ventured by a university in Bangladesh under the DEA program. The journey lasted for 4 days and 3 nights, but will surely serve as a memory of a lifetime for all the participants. The trip was special in many ways - for almost all the students it was the first ever foreign trip without their family; and perhaps was an additional test to the whole notion of their Adventurous Journey challenge.
Breathtaking as it was, Nepal redefined the meaning of nature’s beauty! As a part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards challenge the adventurous journey to the mountainous valleys of Nepal, took the eight member group through an unforgettable experience that will last them a lifetime. The walks through the city, the hikes up the mountains, the feel of their culture, and last but not the least, the spectacular view of the Mt. Everest and the Himalayas – left all the team members spellbound!
Every one of the team had different fears and apprehensions to overcome. Some of them were terrified of the heights, some had never been away from their families and most of them were apprehensive about how they will get along with each other in the group and make the Adventurous Journey a success. But the best part of it was; they all managed to overcome whatever dilemmas they had and actually had a life changing experience. In a new place with new people, somehow it did not feel strange or uncomfortable; rather it felt like a family – the AIUB family of the Edinburgh’s Awards. The risks the group faced together as a part of the journey, the luck the members tried out there, and especially the efforts they all put in to make the trip a success have made some everlasting friendship and taught them to be better team players in order to achieve greater heights.
They embarked on this Adventurous Journey, striving to achieve something beyond greatness. They can now proudly say that “We are the AIUBians participating for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, and we were the first to successfully complete an international ‘adventurous journey.’ Rest assured that this accomplishment has not satiated our thirst rather inspired us to strive for much bigger and better things in life. This was a new chapter added to our list of successes – the start of a bright new beginning”.
