Talk Show on “Bangladesh’s Capital Market: Present and the Future”

Prologue:
Department of Accounting, Faculty of Business Administration of American International University – Bangladesh (AIUB) has organized a Talk Show on “Bangladesh’s Capital Market:  Present and the Future” on 17th April, 2011 in the AIUB Auditorium at 3:30 p.m.  The program started with a rousing message from the Dean of Faculty of Business Administration, Dr. Charles C. Villanueva. With a good number of faculty members from the Department of Accounting and Finance, Dr. A. K. M. Matiur Rahman, Assoicate Dean, Faculty of Business Administration, Dr. AHM Ehsanul Huda, Director, BBA Program, Mr. Md. Zakaria Masud, Head, Department of Accounting and Dr. Dulal Miah, Head, Department of Finance were also present on that occasion in the auditorium. Introduction of the Guests:
Mr. Yawer Sayeed is the founder Managing Director & CEO of Asset & Investment Management Services of Bangladesh Limited (AIMS of Bangladesh), the first approved asset management company in Bangladesh under private initiative. He is a Staff Consultant and Performance Auditor for Operation Evaluation Missions of the Manila based Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the Finance Sector and also acted as the Consultative Group Coordinator of the Bank for the Finance, Industry & Trade Sectors in Bangladesh. Mr. Arif Khan, is the Managing Director & CEO of Zenith Investments Limited, a recently licensed Asset Management Company by the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC). He was the ex President of Bangladesh Merchant Bankers Association (BMBA) and the ex Chairman of IDLC Securities Limited. Mr. Khan is a Fellow Member (FCMA) of the Institute of Cost & Management Accountants of Bangladesh (ICMAB) and is currently a Council Member of the institute. He was a member of the “Core Committee” of Bangladesh Bank (Central Bank) for developing Guidelines for “Domestic Factoring Operation in Bangladesh” and “Asset-Liability Management of NBFIs”. Summary of the Show:
The show was designed in such a fashion so that the floor remained open for questions throughout the program. Mr. Roomee Tareque Moudud, Director, Office of Placement and Alumni of American International University – Bangladesh, was the moderator of the show with two very distinctive guests, Mr. Yawer Sayeed and Mr. Arif Khan. The topic of the show was very interesting and resourceful covering various aspects of Bangladesh capital market like, why Bangladesh capital market behave irrationally; what role is playing by the regulators; how can the market be regulated in a proper manner; what role is performing by the merchant banks; how the assest management firms are operating and guiding people towards investment decisions; behavioral aspects of investment and so many other relevant issues. The guests have also presented the past, present and expected status of Bangladesh Capital Market with a critical underpinning that raises a welcoming storm among the audiences who were mainly the majoring students in Accounting and Finance. Mr. Sayeed concluded his speech by requesting the investors not to go for SHARE BUSINESS rather to go for SHARE INVESTMENT and on the other hand Mr. Khan said that one should not fear of missing participation in the game rather they should fear of getting prepared for the game. Conclusion:
At the end of the show Dr. A. K. M. Matiur Rahman, Associate Dean, Faculty of Business Administration delivered his heartfelt thanks to the guests and the audience for presenting an intellectual and lively session.  Besides, as a sign of gratitude, Dr. Charles C Villanueva handed over a certificate of appreciation and some souvenirs to the guests.
