The Students of the Department Public Health of American International University – Bangladesh (AIUB) visited Kashimpur Health and Family Welfare Centre (H&FWC) and an Effluent Treatment Plant of a Garments Industry located in Sadar Upazila of Gazipur district on 25 February 2012. The purpose of the visit was to acquaint students with different types of curative and preventive services, mechanism of delivering services, monitoring and assurance of quality of the services provided.
On arrival at the Union Health and Family Welfare Centre (UH&FWC), the Sub-assistant Community Medical Officer (SACMO) and Family Welfare Visitors (FWVs) received the students and briefed about the services provided from the Centre. The Centre is primarily meant for serving the mother and child. A contingent of six Family Welfare Assistants (FWAs) under the leadership of Family Planning Inspector (FPI) provides family planning services including motivation at the field level. The SACMO and FWVs organize Satellite Clinic at the village level two days a week. The Centre has the facility of conducting normal delivery.
Then the students visited ETP and an Officer In-charge of the Plant showed them different stages of the treatment of the waste disposed by the dyeing section of the Garments factory. He also explained how it protects the environment from the pollution which has direct consequence on public health.
The Officials of H&FWC and ETP were cordial in explaining their different activities and also accepted the team very warmly. The students were accompanied by Professor Tazul Islam, Dean, FASS, Professor Ahmed Neaz, Advisor, Professor K C Bhuiya, Mr. Mahidul Islam, Adjunct Faculty and Dr. Md. Aurangzeb, Program Officer of the Department of Public Health.
