On Thursday, August 13, 2026, the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), supported by the AIUB Computer Club (ACC), hosted a seminar titled “Software Requirement Engineering: Industry Practices” at the Multipurpose Hall, D Building, AIUB. Designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world software practices, the event featured keynote speaker Md. Shahjahan Islam Sani, Project Manager, Delivery Lead & Head of Managed Services at Brain Station-23 PLC. Dr. Abhijit Bhowmik, Associate Professor and Special Assistant of OSA, was also present.

The session kicked off with an introduction to Software Requirement Engineering (SRE). Highlighting common industry pitfalls, Mr. Sani noted how ambiguous mandates like "We Want Wallet Transfer" derail projects without a proper Software Requirement Specification (SRS) document. He pointed out that the most expensive sentence in software development is "That’s not what I want," illustrating how a single unclarified requirement can yield five different interpretations. He then categorized requirements into functional, non-functional, and business-minded types.

Moving to the Requirement Development Lifecycle, Mr. Sani emphasized that an SRS serves as an essential agreement between stakeholders, not just plain documentation. He walked students through moving from vague requests to solid requirements using structured questioning, logical flowchart diagrams, and comparative examples of good versus bad requirements. On Requirement Traceability, he outlined key steps: documentation, prioritization, baseline setup, versioning, and change management. He noted that while change is normal, uncontrolled scope creep is dangerous; hence, project managers must carefully evaluate impacts on scope, time, cost, quality, and testing before approving updates.

The seminar concluded with an energetic, interactive Q&A. Students tackled practical scenarios involving unintegrated features and analyzed case studies to distinguish between bulk and new requirements.

At the end, Dr. Abhijit Bhowmik presented a token of appreciation to the speaker, thanking him for his time and insights, followed by a group photo with attendees. With over 200 students participating, the highly engaging seminar successfully equipped future developers with a clearer understanding of how communication, thorough documentation, and structured processes drive real-world software success.
