Seminar on “Internet Evolution: from past to the future”

On Wednesday, 7 February 2024 the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), AIUB has successfully organized a seminar titled “Internet Evolution: from past to the future”. The primary aim of this talk was harnessing industry and academia by discoursing the frontier developments in networking - internet communication systems and IoT industries. The seminar provided insights into the communication technologies dating back from copper to the present to the futuristic VR, AR or AI technologies.

The event was initiated with the warm grace of Mr. Mashiour Rahman, Dean in Charge, Faculty of Science and Technology, AIUB accompanied by Dr. Md. Abdullah-Al-Jubair, Director & Assistant Professor, Faculty of Science and Technology, AIUB.

Mr. Sumon Ahmed Sabir, CTO, Fiber@Home and Executive Council Member of Asia Pacific Network Operation Center (APNIC) contributed as the esteemed speaker to the seminar. Mr. Sumon talked about the history, starting from the past he discussed how the present internet has evolved. From Dialup to today's broadband, from Copper to Satellite to Fiber Optic Network then back to Satellite again. From UUCP to TCP/IP, IPv4 to IPv6, from Routing to Segment Routing, from X.25 to today's DWDM Network. Also, a bit on the future- AI, ML, SDN, IoT, Automation, AR, VR etc.

The speaker highlighted the importance of curriculum-based Engineering education and research in this area to address real-world communication traffic challenges. He presented thoughtful and practical guidance which is in practice in IT industries for aspiring learners and researchers covering the realm of recruitment process in IoT companies. Mr. Sumon discussed the rapidly evolving technologies including small gadgets to ultra-fast high-tech devices and data management protocols ‘Data Center & Cloud’ including materials involved. He encouraged future engineers to focus on the proper knowledge to meet the growing demand in this sector. He also highlighted the challenges related to global data traffic and local ISP services. In the Q&A session, he warmly answered all the queries.

Following the Q&A session, Dr. Mohammad Anisur Rahman Jamil, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, FST, AIUB delivered his concluding remarks of the session where he highlighted the speaker's credentials and potential networking opportunities with the speaker and Fiber@Home for the AIUB students.

The session started at 2:30 PM and ended at 4:00 PM. A total of 100+ participants attended the seminar. Honorable faculty members Dr. S. Mosaddeq Ahmed, Professor & Department Head, Department of Chemistry; Dr. Rezaul K.
