Law Students Visited a Factory in Gazipur to Learn about Compliance of RMG Industry

On February 19, 2024, the department of law of American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) took fifty of its law students on a field trip to learn more about the practical use of compliance mechanisms in the garment factories of Bangladesh. Two members of the AIUB Law department, Mr. Md. Khalid Rahman, Assistant Professor, and Mr. Muzahidul Islam, Lecturer, accompanied the team. The tour was centered on two garments factories—Northern Corporation Limited and Fashion Asia Limited—that are part of the Northern Tosrifa Group and are situated in Sreepur, Gazipur, Bangladesh.

The group departed from AIUB at 9 am and arrived at the factory premises at 11 am. Upon arrival, the students were divided into two groups, each assigned to explore one of the two factories under the Northern Tosrifa Group. At Northern Corporation Limited, Mr. Md Mohsin Mia, Deputy General Manager, and Mr. Kamruzzaman, Executive, HR, warmly welcomed the students. Simultaneously, at Fashion Asia Limited, Mr. Md Rezaul Karim, General Manager, and Mr. Reaz, Deputy Manager (HR & Admin), received the other group. Both factories initiated the visit with an introductory session on compliance mechanisms, providing an overview of the factory's commitment to ensuring ethical operations.

The students then explored the factories to gain firsthand knowledge of the working conditions, safety measures, and environmental protection practices. The factory officials shared valuable insights into their compliance procedures, shedding light on the complexities and challenges faced by the garment industry in maintaining legal and ethical standards.

Following the factory exploration, a Question Answer (QA) session was conducted, where students had the opportunity to engage with the garment’s officials. This session allowed for an open exchange of ideas and clarification on various aspects of compliance mechanisms. The students actively participated, raising questions and seeking further understanding of the practices implemented in the factories. The factory visit proved to be an enriching experience for the law students, offering them a practical perspective on the implementation of compliance mechanisms in the garment industry. The insights gained from the visit will undoubtedly contribute to their academic understanding of legal frameworks related to workers' rights, safety regulations, and environmental protection.

On behalf of AIUB, the faculty members delivered the garment authorities a gift of thanks as a gesture of appreciation for the important time and knowledge they contributed for the students.
