International Public Speaking Competition 2013 held in AIUB

The English Speaking Union of Bangladesh organized the grand final of the national level International Public Speaking Competition 2013 held in the AIUB auditorium on March 09, 2013. It was an exciting event that witnessed talented young people from 14 institutions (cadet colleges and universities) demonstrate their command of English. The theme of the competition was 'A House Divided against Itself Cannot Stand”. According to the rules set by the International English Speaking Union of UK, each of the contestants spoke for 5 minutes followed by a 2-minute question-answer session. After a nail-biting contest, 2 best candidates were selected and they had to speak on an impromptu topic for 3 minutes each. At the end, Abdul Taiab Akon of Barisal Cadet College became the National Champion and Samia Rahman of Adamjee Cantonment College became the Runner up. The National Champion will represent Bangladesh at the International Public Speaking Competition 2013 that will run from 13 May to 17 May in London. The theme of that event will be 'Ideas Are Our Greatest Weapons. Dr. Carmen Zita Lamagna, Vice Chancellor of AIUB, graced the occasion as Chief Guest who declared that AIUB will do everything to further train the winner as he would represent Bangladesh in UK. Highly appreciating the powerful display of oratory skills by all 14 contestants, Dr. Lamagna also promised to extend AIUB’s continued support to the English Speaking Union for all future events like this. She then distributed certificates and prizes to all the finalists. Mr. Asif A Chowdhury, the Chairperson of the ESU Bangladesh was also present who hoped that ESU’s collaborative efforts with AIUB will gradually increase from now on.  Dean of Arts & Social Sciences Dr. Tazul Islam, Dean of Business Administration Dr. Charles Villanueva, Dean of Engineering & Electronics Dr. Siddique Hossain, Head of English Department Dr. Faheem Hasan Shahed, teachers and guardians of the contestants, judges from prestigious organizations were present on the occasion.
