On April 23, April 30, and May 7, 2026, the Faculty of Engineering (FE) of the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) organized 3 daylong industrial visits to the DESCO 132/33 kV Grid Substation. A total of 120 final-year students from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) participated in the visit as part of the course Power Stations and Substations, taught by Dr. Md. Hasan Imam.
The visits were designed to enhance students’ practical understanding of electrical power transmission and distribution systems, grid operations, substation technologies, industrial automation, and safety practices. The program was coordinated by Dr. Md. Hasan Imam, Dr. Mohammad Khorshed Alam, and Mr. Oshim Kumar Pal, with official permission from the Power Division, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Government of Bangladesh.
Each day, the program began with an introductory session conducted by Raihan Mondol, Executive Engineer and Division Head of the substation, who explained the operational significance of the DESCO 132/33 kV Grid Substation within the national power network. This was followed by a technical briefing and guided tour led by Saiful Islam, Executive Engineer, and Mahmudur Rahman, Sub-Assistant Engineer, DESCO. During the visit, students observed how electrical power is received from Tongi and Rampura through two 132 kV transmission lines and stepped down to 33 kV using five transformers for distribution. They also gained firsthand experience of transformer operations, switching systems, voltage regulation, protection mechanisms, and load management.A key highlight of the visit was the control room demonstration, where students were introduced to PLC- and software-based monitoring and control systems used for real-time grid operation. Engineers also demonstrated transformer synchronization, switchyard maintenance procedures, and industrial automation techniques used in modern gas-insulated substations (GIS).
The last day program concluded with closing remarks from Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abdul Mannan, Prof. Dr. Md. Saniat Rahman Zishan and Dr. Md. Hasan Imam, who thanked the DESCO officials for their support and presented souvenirs on behalf of AIUB.
