IEEE AIUB Student Branch, in collaboration with the IEEE EMBS AIUB Student Branch Chapter, successfully organized a Distinguished Lecture session titled “Epilepsy, Algorithms, and AI: Personalized Seizure Forecasting” through the virtual platform, Google Meet. The session was conducted by Prof. David B. Grayden, Clifford Chair, Neural Engineering; Director, MSE Medical Technologies Research Platform, Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Melbourne, who mainly focused on the disorder epilepsy and significant impacts of AI-based computational studies on it.
The event was hosted by Dr. Mohammad Hasan Imam, Counselor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch; Advisor, IEEE EMBS AIUB SB Chapter; Senior Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB and was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. A.B.M Siddique Hossain; Advisor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch; Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB who briefly gave an idea of the disorder epilepsy along with the technologies that biomedical engineers have developed till date. He also highlighted some key reasons for this kind of disorder and the ways of reducing the probability of such an occurrence in the next generation. After that, Prof. David B. Grayden started his session by explaining the epileptic seizures and talked about how big data and deep learning can be used to predict them. He also explained how deep learning neural networks can be used for understanding the input-output relationships of epileptic seizures. He talked about the Kaggle competition that took place in the past where 478 teams participated and submitted 10082 algorithms on Crowd-Sourcing Reproducible Seizures Prediction concepts. He also displayed some of the selected works from the competition. Later, Prof. Grayden gave an overview of the current research works which are going on as a part of the treatment of epileptic seizures. He also gave an overview of how patients can predict their seizure by using minimally invasive seizure forecasting app from their smartphones. Then, an interactive question-answer session took place where the speaker answered all the questions from the participants.
Later, Prof. Dr. Shaikh Anwarul Fattah, Vice-Chair, IEEE EMBS Bangladesh Chapter; Nominations & Appointment Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section; Professor, Department of EEE, BUET and Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section; Chair, IEEE EMBS Bangladesh Chapter; Professor, Department of EEE, BUET respectively shared their experience on working with seizure prediction. They also talked about its healthy prospects in the ongoing research. After that, Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman, Advisor, IEEE AIUB SB; Vice-Chairperson (Activity), IEEE Bangladesh Section; Associate Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB delivered the concluding speech where he highlighted the development of AI in the modern world along with its involvement in Biomedical sectors. He also shared his research work experience. He expressed his gratitude towards the speaker for providing his valuable time and the student branch for successfully organizing the event. The event was graced by the presence of 195+ registered participants from different parts of the world, including numerous researchers in the sector of Biomedical Engineering.
