IEEE AIUB Student Branch Presented a Technical Talk on “Simple Microwave Technique of Measuring 2-Phase Contents of a Petroleum Carrying Pipeline”

A technical talk on “Simple Microwave Technique of Measuring 2-Phase Contents of a Petroleum Carrying Pipeline” was presented by IEEE AIUB Student Branch on 7th July 2014, 3pm in Room 266. The seminar aimed to discuss the design of a simple microwave sensor used to determine contents flowing through a petroleum carrying pipeline. Dr. A.B.M Siddique Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Engineering commenced the seminar with a few words of insight into the helpfulness of such seminars. The main part of the event was conducted by keynote speaker Dr. Sheikh Sharif Iqbal who is a Senior Member of IEEE and an Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering in King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The respected guest speaker presented an introduction to the benefits of using microwave in detecting contents of pipelines and discussed the basic design for obtaining best results including antennae design and placement, modifications to simulated results and adjustments made in practical implementations. The use of visual representations such as graphs and simulated models as well as brief mathematical calculations involved, captivated the interest of all attendees. Prospect and opportunity of research in related fields were also highlighted. The engaging seminar concluded with an interactive and practical question answer session which reflected the simplicity yet effectiveness of the event. The speaker congratulated IEEE AIUB Student Branch for arranging such seminars along with its other constructive activities.

Mr. Rinku Basak, Head, Graduate Program, Faculty of Engineering then shared a few words drawing the attention of the students towards the importance of basics in the process of learning. To conclude the event, the respected speaker was presented with a small token of appreciation in recognition of his contribution and participation. The event was graced by the presence of Dr. M.A. Mannan, Head, Undergraduate Program, Faculty of Engineering; Mr. Farhadur Arifin, Counselor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch & Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering; Mr. Taskin Jamal, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering and Mr. Rashedul Hoque, Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering.
