IEEE AIUB Student Branch organized a workshop entitled “Daylong Workshop on LINUX” on 16th March, 2015 at Room no. 266, Building 2, Faculty of Engineering, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). The workshop was aimed at introducing Linux and the Ubuntu OS to over 90 participants along with the applications and prospect for engineering students. The event received technical support from Ubuntu Bangladesh and its instructors, who shared their knowledge and experience using systems based on Linux, with the participants.
Dr. A.B.M Siddique Hossain, Honorable Dean, Faculty of Engineering initiated the event by delivering a short speech, emphasizing on why it is necessary for both computer science and engineering students to be well familiarized with such operating systems. The workshop started off with Mr. Alamgir Jalil, Trainee Executive Technical Support, IT Division, Beximco Limited & Alumni, AIUB as he introduced the participants to the basic concepts of the open-source community. The event was carried forward by Mr. Muhammad Adnan Quaium, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB & Executive Member, Ubuntu Bangladesh, who presented an immersive slideshow highlighting the origins of Ubuntu OS and its open-source community. He further went on to demonstrate some software’s that are available on Ubuntu to perform a wide range of tasks. The session also included a small presentation by a group of AIUB students. The students presented their project on image processing, which they developed on the Ubuntu OS.
Next, Mr. Russell John, Executive Member, Ubuntu Bangladesh engaged in an interactive session with the participants and demonstrated basic operations using the Ubuntu interface. He provided additional support by inviting the participants to join the Facebook group for Ubuntu Bangladesh and post their questions and queries. Mr. Shantanu Saha, Member, Ubuntu Bangladesh then highlighted some more advanced features of Ubuntu. The final speaker Mr. Mohammad Foysal Kayum, Senior Manager, IT Division, Beximco Limited shared his technical and practical knowledge on cloud computing and virtualization in the professional field, with the participants. He emphasized on the importance of the relationship that exists between software and hardware.
The event concluded with a short speech by Dr. Mohammad Abdul Mannan, Head, Undergraduate Program & Associate Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, at the end of which he thanked the guests and instructors and presented them a small token of appreciation and crests for their time and participation in the workshop. Mr. Md. Saniat Rahman Zishan, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB & Advisor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch and Ms. Tasnuva Tasneem, Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB and Faculty Coordinator, IEEE AIUB Student Branch (WIE wing) then presented the participants with certificates of participation. The event was also graced by the presence of Mr. Farhadur Arifin, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB & Counselor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch. Students from several renowned universities such as Dhaka University, North South University, Pabna University of Science & Technology also joined the workshop as participants.
