IEEE AIUB Student Branch organized an Industrial Tour to “Summit Uttaranchal Power Co. Ltd”

On the 22nd of November 2013, IEEE AIUB Student Branch organized an Industrial Tour to Summit Uttaranchal Power Co. Ltd located at Maona, Gazipur. A group of very enthusiastic IEEE student members, 41 in number were accompanied by faculty members from EEE department Mr. Md. Saniat Rahman Zishan, Asst. Prof. & Special Asst. of OSA, Mr. Md. Mamunur Rashid, Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering, Ms. Tasnuva Tasneem, Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering and Ms. Tajbia Karim, Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering. The team departed from Campus-2 at around eight in the morning. The Summit Uttaranchal Power (Maona Power Plant) Company is a project that was set up to provide electricity for Mymensingh and Gazipur Palli Bidyut Samity (PBS) under 15-years Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Rural Electrification Board (REB). An implementation agreement has also been signed with the Government of Bangladesh (GoB). The total output of the plant is 33 MW. Natural gas is used as fuel source for the plant. The students were facilitated by on site engineers residing in the power plant Mr. Md. Arifur Rahman Chowdhury, Engineer (O & M), Grade 1, Mr. Md. Rafiul Islam, Engineer (O & M), Grade 2, and Mr. Md. Khalik, Operator (Mechanical). On arrival the students were briefed in the conference room, afterwards breaking up into three teams to tour the plant. The tour helped students familiarize themselves with the power plant. Tours like these help students broaden their sense of practical knowledge and this tour was no different. The Power Plant was divided into various zones according to the activities associated with the operational process. The zones were categorized as the control room, the engine room, the substation/switchyard, the RMS & Radiators and battery/power room (LV, MV & DG). All the zones were covered in the tour whereby the students were briefed regarding the control processes of the machineries and equipment involved by the facilitating engineers. At the end of the tour, Mr. Md. Saniat Rahman Zishan and Mr. Md. Mamunur Rashid presented the IEEE Crest of Appreciation along with AIUB gift hampers to Mr. Md. Anisur Rahman, Deputy Plant Manager, Maona Power Plant, Summit Power Limited and the facilitating Engineering Team on behalf of IEEE AIUB Student Branch and the EEE department of AIUB. The company also praised IEEE AIUB Student Branch for their initiatives and considered to aid initiating further events like this in the future.
