IEEE AIUB STUDENT BRANCH ORGANIZED “WORKSHOP ON LATEX & LYX”

On 28th June 2015, IEEE AIUB Student Branch organized a workshop titled “Workshop on LaTeX & LyX” in Room No. 266, Building 2, Faculty of Engineering, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). The workshop was aimed at introducing the 100+ participants to the high quality typesetting system known as LaTeX and its complementary open-source document processor named LyX, along with their applications and the prospects they hold for engineering students. The event was led by two experienced instructors who shared their technical knowledge and guided the participants, in a hands-on interactive workshop.

Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Siddique Hossain, Honorable Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB initiated the event by welcoming the participants and delivering a short speech emphasizing on how article-writing tools are beneficial for engineering students in both the job sector and their academic lives. First, Mr. Ismail Hossain, Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB highlighted key benefits and limitations of using LaTeX and LyX and their core features. Next, Mr. Wayesh Qarony, Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, talked about the numerous advantages LaTeX holds while writing a thesis paper, a CV, a scientific journal or any other document of international standards. He displayed the various functions, formatting tools to edit a document based on LaTeX. The participants followed along on their laptops simultaneously. Mr. Ismail Hossain then further demonstrated how to create a thesis book on LyX focusing on how to choose desired settings, along with how to insert images, tables and mathematical equations. The workshop ended with a question answer session.

Mr. Farhadur Arifin, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB & Counselor of IEEE AIUB Student Branch, thanked the instructors and presented them with small tokens of appreciation and crests, for their time and participation. Certificates and food parcels were distributed among all participants. The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan, Head of EEE Undergraduate Program & Associate  Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, Mr. Chowdhury Akram Hossain, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB & Mentor of IEEE AIUB Student Branch, Mr. Md. Mamunur Rashid, Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB , Ms. Tasnuva Tasneem Lecturer, Department of EEE, AIUB & Women In Engineering (WIE) Coordinator of IEEE AIUB Student Branch, Mr. Shahriar Hasan, Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB & Motivator of IEEE AIUB Student Branch and Mr. Kazi Ahmed Asif Fuad, Teaching Assistant, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB. Students from other universities such as Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) and Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) also joined the event as participants.
