IEEE AIUB Student Branch celebrates ‘IEEE Day 2018’

On 11th October 2018, IEEE AIUB Student Branch in collaboration with IEEE Computer Society Bangladesh Chapter celebrated IEEE Day 2018 at American International University – Bangladesh. IEEE Day is celebrated every year in commemoration of the first time in history when worldwide engineers and IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas in 1884. The world always benefits from what’s new, and IEEE focuses on what’s next; hence the official theme of IEEE Day is “Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow”. On this special day, not only engineering and technology are celebrated - engineers and IEEE members are celebrated as well. On this fun-filled eventful day, in addition to informative technical talks by distinguished speakers, there were interactive games and a special cultural program to entertain the participants.

The day-long venture was inaugurated with a cake cutting ceremony by honorable Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna, Vice Chancellor, American International University – Bangladesh. She thanked IEEE AIUB Student Branch for their effort in organizing the venture. The cake-cutting ceremony was also graced by Prof. Dr. A.B.M Siddique Hossain, Dean, Faculty of engineering, AIUB, Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman, Associate Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan, Director in charge, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, Dr. M Mohiuddin Uzzal, Graduate Head, EEE, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, Md. Saniat Rahman Zishan, Head, Department of  Computer Engineering (CoE), Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, Chowdhury Akram Hossain, Counselor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch; Senior Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering; Special Assistant, Office of Student Affairs, AIUB along with other faculty members and administrative officers.

After the inauguration ceremony the first session of the event, a seminar on Grid Integration Issues of Large-Scale Wind Power was initiated by the first speaker of the session, Md. Rifat Hazari, Ph.D. Researcher, Kitami Institute of Technology (KIT), Japan, who started by discussing the common renewable energy sources. Next, he discussed wind power and disclosed the global wind power usage and its energy generation statistics. Afterward, he elaborated on the wind turbine technology and discussed its working principle. He finished the session by evaluating the advantages of high and low voltage rides through simulation results. Next on the stage was the second speaker of the session, Effat Jahan, Ph.D. Researcher, Kitami Institute of Technology (KIT), Japan, who initiated her part of the session by talking about her field of research. Afterward, she elaborated on hybrid power systems. She discussed in detail a proposed model on VSC based HVDC system and the frequency regulation of hybrid power systems. Later, Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan handed over crests and tokens of appreciation to Md. Rifat Hazari and Effat Jahan respectively for conducting the seminars.Following the lunch break, the second session - a seminar on Career Opportunity, Higher Study and Research Scope in Photonics and Photonic Communication was conducted by Dr. Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Professional Engineer; Associate Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB. He started by elaborating on photonics, its relation with other fields of study and its applications on various industries. Next, he discussed the scopes of higher study and research opportunities in this field and the amount of funding a student can obtain based on current funding schemes of different universities. Following that, he discussed on the career opportunities and salary range in this field. Later, Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan handed over crest and token of appreciation to Dr. Mohammad Nasir Uddin.

Next, the interactive session took place. The first segment of the interactive session was a contest on Spot the Difference where the participants had to spot differences between two similar pictures showed to them and write the dissimilarities. Next there was a game of Dumb Charade where a participant had to mimic a particular character and all other participants had to guess that character. The last segment of the interactive session was a game of Scavenger Hunt where participants had to form teams of five members. Participants had to solve sudokus and equations to find the room number where they would eventually find their next problem to solve and advance in the game. Following that, the cultural and prize-giving ceremony took place. For the cultural session, musical performances took place by in-house performers. The closing speech of the day-long venture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman, who thanked the volunteers, executives and faculty members associated with IEEE AIUB Student Branch for their dedication and effort to arrange and organize informative and effective events and to work towards achieving perfection. Later, Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman along with Dr. M Mohiuddin Uzzal, Chowdhury Akram Hossain. Dr. M. Tanseer Ali, Professional Activity Coordinator, IEEE Bangladesh Section; Senior Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB & Special Assistant, Capstone Project, Kawshik Shikder, Motivator, IEEE AIUB Student Branch; Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB and Safayet Ahmed, Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, handed out prizes to the winners of various games and contests which marked the end of the event.
