IEEE AIUB SB Organized an Industrial Tour to Haripur 412 MW Combined-Cycle Power Plant

On 6th April, 2017, IEEE Industrial Application Society (IA-S) AIUB Student Branch Chapter successfully organized the first industrial tour of the year to Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh Limited at Haripur, Narayanganj. the 412 MW combined-cycle power plant is one of the largest power plants in Bangladesh which uses both gas and steam turbine together to produce up to 50 percent more electricity from the same fuel than a traditional single-cycle plant. The expedition was a delightful opportunity for the participants who were interested in the field of electrical technology.

On arrival to the site, the participants and the faculty member were welcomed and briefed by Mr. Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Executive Engineer, Electrical, Haripur 412 MW combined-cycle power plant. Later the participants were divided into three groups, each led by an assistant engineer. The instructors thoroughly guided the participants on the working principles of a gas turbine, steam turbine, step-up generator, cooling system, H2 cooled generator, compressor, safety feature and water purification system respectively. They also guided the students to the Central Control Room (CCR) and presented a brief demonstration on how the entire power plant is controlled through computer controlled system architecture. Finally, Mr. Md. Kamruzzaman, Superintending Engineer, Maintenance, Haripur 412 MW Combined-Cycle Power Plant, who shared his thoughts on how this expedition could be beneficial for the participants who are looking to explore the field of electrical technology in future.

The venture was concluded by handing out a small token of appreciation to the executive authorities of the power plant by Mr. Safayet Ahmed, Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB. A total of 45 IEEE AIUB Student Branch members participated in the industrial tour.
