Grand Finale of English Public Speaking Contest

Grand Finale of English Public Speaking Contest

AIUB's Department of English successfully organized the Grand Finale of "English in Action: English Public Speaking Contest" for the Spring semester on 22 April 2014 at the Campus-1 auditorium. With tremendous enthusiasm and firepower, the participants fought in 4 different categories: Oration, Impromptu Speaking, Manuscript Reading and PowerPoint Presentation. It needs to be mentioned that the preliminary round of this contest was held earlier on 23 March 2014 where a large number of first semester students from EEE, CSE, BBA and BA contested in these 4 categories. Out of them, the best performers were selected as Grand Finalists.

The Guest of Honor of this event was Prof. Dr. Charles C Villanueva, the honorable Pro Vice Chancellor of AIUB. Prof. Dr. Tazul Islam, the honorable Dean of Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences and Prof. Dr. A B M Siddique Hossain, the honorable Dean of Faculty of Engineering attended as Special Guests. Head of the English Department Dr. Faheem Hasan Shahed welcomed the guests, colleagues of different departments and participants, and explained the rationale behind such a contest—especially for the fresher students. Appreciating the English Department for this effort to enhance public speaking skills of the fresher students, the honorable guests came up with stimulating speeches for the participants. The guests were also in charge of conducting the judgment as well. The contest in all categories was so nail-biting that it gave the judges quite a difficult time to decide the best among the best. Ms. Shaila Ahmed, Ms. Jannatul Farhana, Ms. Momena Afroz Ahmed, Mr. Mehedi Kayser Pabitra and Ms. Farhat Tasannum Farah (faculty members of the English Department ) supervised the entire event. Dr. Faheem finally announced the Grand Winners on behalf of the judges. While everyone performed excellently, it was the EEE freshers who overwhelmingly dominated by bagging 8 out of 13 prizes.
