The Department of English at American International University-Bangladesh offers a graduate program leading to a MA degree. The MA in English at American International University-Bangladesh is a 40-credit program. The program requires the completion of a minimum of 34 credits of courses in any one of the following disciplines: Literature and Cultural Studies and Applied Linguistics and TESOL. Students may submit a thesis worth 6 credits after successfully completing 34 credits of course work.
Minimum Duration
- For candidates with 4-year Bachelor degree: Full time in Mixed Mode - 1.5 years (Taught courses and Thesis)
- For candidates with 3-year Bachelor degree: Full time in Mixed Mode - 2 years (Taught courses and Thesis)
Minimum Graduating Credits
- For candidates with 4-year Bachelor degree: Full time in Mixed Mode – 34 credits for course work + 6 credits for Thesis or 40 credits for course work (based on 40 notional hours/credit)
- For candidates with 3-year Bachelor degree: Full time in Mixed Mode – 46 credits for course work + 6 credits for Thesis or 52 credits for course work (based on 52 notional hours/credit)
Eligibility for Admission
- 4-year Bachelor of Arts in English or
- At least a second class in a 3-year Bachelor of Arts program in English or
- M. A. or MS in subjects of liberal arts & social sciences and
- Minimum 2nd division in SSC, HSC & Graduation from any of the disciplines or minimum GPA 2.5 in HSC & SSC (in the scale of 5) and minimum CGPA 2.5 in bachelor’s degree (in the scale of 4) or
- For A Level & O Level Background, Minimum GPA 2.5 in O Levels & GPA 2.0 in A Levels separately with no grade lower than ‘D’ among best 5 subjects in O level and best 2 subjects in A' level. (Scale: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2 & E=1).

Thesis (6 credits):
In the final semester, students may carry out small-scale independent research investigating one significant issue related to English Literature and Cultural Studies or Applied Linguistics and TESOL. The specific focus of the project is to be chosen in consultation with the guidance of a supervisor and based on a formal research proposal. In principle, this project may have the focus of a survey, an experimental study or a case study. The dissertation requires students to present and defend a piece of written work of 10,000 to 12,000 words.
