EEE students of AIUB made a Study Trip to Karnafuli Hydro Power Station and Karnafuli Paper Mills

First time ever the EEE students of AIUB made a Study Trip to Karnafuli Hydro Power Station and Karnafuli Paper Mills Limited

Karnaphuli Hydro Power Station is a Clean and Sustainable Energy Resource. The Kaptai Upazila (sub district) is a part of the Rangamati District of Chittagong Division. The Kaptai Dam is the largest man-made dam in Bangladesh and was built on the Karnaphuli River. Visit to such stations always help the students to understand the power generation process, specially using Renewable Energy Resources. The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) regularly arranges such study trips, but this is the first time EEE department has arranged the trip to Kaptai. This trip was unique because it was the only Hydro Power Station of Bangladesh, as well as the trip also included the visit to the Karnafuli Paper Mills Ltd (KPM) which is the largest and oldest paper producing factory in Bangladesh, established in 1953. KPM uses pulp which is obtained from fibrous raw materials, like bamboo, extracted from the Chittagong Hill Tracts. It also uses the pulp produced in the Sylhet Pulp and Paper Mills as well as imported pulp. The installed capacity of KPM is 33,000 tons and the budgeted production is 28,438 tons, while the actual production is 30,216 tons. The trip to Kaptai was arranged by Md. Mahbubur Rahman Shahin, Syma Ahmed, Gazi Sani Isnaine and Md. Didadrul Islam Rifat who are the students of Power Station (Section: B), class of Summer 2011.  They were also well accompanied by Ammar, Pavel, Asif, Nafiz, Shoeb and Devleen which made the trip a success. The tour was attended by Mr. Dhrupad Debnath, Najia Hossain & Habib Muhammad Nazir Ahmad, Lecturers of EEE Department along with 43 enthusiastic students. The Department of EEE would like to express earnest gratitude to BPDB, Engr. Indronil Barua (Additional Director of BPDB), Belayet Hossain (DGM of Sonali Bank, Chittagong Branch), Engr. G.M. Tauseef, (Senior Service Engineer, GE Jenbacher-OESL & Ex AIUBIAN), AIUB administration and the Kaptai Power Station authorities for their invaluable support & generous hospitality.
