n Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the Department of Economics under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) hosted a vibrant and memorable Freshmen Reception and Farewell Program for the Summer 2024–2025 semester. The event took place at the Multipurpose Hall, Annex 7, bringing together the newest members of the Economics department along with the graduating batch for a shared celebration of beginnings and farewells. The dual-purpose program was designed to welcome incoming freshmen while honoring the outgoing graduating students, creating a platform to foster connections, celebrate achievements, and share departmental values.
The event commenced with a solemn minute of silence in memory of the tragic incident involving students of Milestone School and College, offering heartfelt condolences and solidarity with the grieving families. This respectful tribute set a tone of reflection and empathy before the celebrations began.
Following the moment of silence, Dr. Farhana Rafiq, Senior Assistant Professor of the Department of Economics and Mentor of the AIUB Economics Club. Her remarks set the tone for a supportive and engaging environment, encouraging new students to explore the opportunities ahead. Dr. Faria Sultana, Head of the Department of Economics, addressed the audience with heartfelt encouragement for the freshmen and a sincere congratulation to the outgoing class. She emphasized that the graduating students are now the "ambassadors of AIUB," carrying forward the institution’s legacy of academic excellence and integrity. Other esteemed faculty members and departmental heads, were present to greet the new students and extend their support. Their presence highlighted the department’s dedication to guiding students throughout their academic journey.
Adding further distinction to the program, Prof. Dr. Tazul Islam, Dean of FASS, shared his insights on the transformative role of education and the significance of Economics in today's world. He encouraged students to embrace challenges with resilience and to remain curious lifelong learners. He also emphasized the importance of contributing positively to society through ethical leadership and informed decision-making. The event was honored by the presence of Prof. Dr. Saiful Islam, Vice Chancellor of AIUB, who delivered an inspiring speech highlighting the importance of upholding values, respecting ethics, and maintaining a strong moral foundation in academic and professional life. His words resonated deeply with both new and graduating students.
