Department of Public Health and BCB organized workshop on Heat Illness prevention

The Department of Public Health, AIUB organized a workshop titled “How to Prevent Heat Illness and How to Manage Effectively a Heat Exhausted person”. The workshop, jointly organized with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and held at the BCB office on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, was attended by the BCB enlisted players. Dr. Muhammad Wasif Alam, Head of the Dept. of Public Health spoke on the risk factors of heat illness, acclimatization, diagnosis, and management of different types of heat illness. He emphasized the importance of measuring Humidity percentage in the ambient air along with its temperature (Heat Index). He cautioned that the humidity usually rises in the evening which can increase the Heat Index – the actual feeling of heat.  Dr. Alam along with Dr. Debasis (Chief Physician of BCB), reiterated that drinking clean, cold water frequently (before thirst develops) along with resting in shade is the best preventive measure against heat illness. They encouraged athletes to have a good night’s sleep and avoid greasy food and carbonated drinks with caffeine (including tea and coffee) on a hot and humid day. A heat exhausted patient Mockup was presented to imitate a real-life scenario of managing heat illness. The Pro-Vice Chancellor of AIUB, Prof. Dr. Abdur Rahman, being the chief guest of the workshop appreciated the joint initiative and hoped such educational and awareness events be arranged on a regular basis.
