Bangladesh Investment Climate Fund (BICF), managed by IFC, in partnership with the U.K. Department for International Development and the European Union, organized a debate competition on business reforms in Bangladesh. The debate competition titled “Creating Opportunities for Tomorrow” featured undergraduate students from the five private universities – American International University-Bangladesh, BRAC University, Independent University of Bangladesh and North South University. Dignitaries from the academic world, private sector and civil society contributed in the event as judges and chairs. The first round was chaired by Mr. Aftab ul Islam, Chairman, SME Foundation while he second round and final was chaired by Dr. Nazrul Islam, Chairman, University Grants Commission and Dr. Syed Abdus Samad, Executive Chairman, Board of Investment.
Congratulations to the AIUB Team 1, for ranking at 3rd place and made
many excellent points throughout the competition. BRAC University won the debate with North South University as the first runner up. The debate competition explored a variety of investment climate issues that ranged from the readiness of Bangladesh to facilitate infrastructure development through Public Private Partnership window o the role of E-governance to reduce corruption, as well as regional trade issues such as South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) and its subsequent impact on investment climate of the country. The topic of the final round was whether skills development was more important for domestic workers or for migrant workers.
