The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (DEA), an international non-formal education framework operating in over 120 countries, is a global recognition for young people to develop life skills, resilience, and employability. DEA began its journey at the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) in 2008, challenging participants to set and achieve goals in volunteering, physical activity, and skills development at Bronze, Silver, or Gold levels. Building on the requirement of the adventurous journey and residential project for its 121 participants, DEA-AIUB embarked on a rigorous tour to Foy’s Lake Basecamp, located in Chattogram.
The program was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Manzur H. Khan, the Proctor of AIUB and the Award Coordinator of DEA–AIUB, alongside Dr. Ziarat H. Khan, the Deputy Director of Student Service & Welfare and Award Leader of DEA - AIUB. The initiative was further supported by Rakib Aziz and Md. Masud Rana, administrative officials of AIUB and Award Leaders of DEA-AIUB. The entire program was based on the proactive efforts and dedication of the entire team.
Participants took part in a variety of challenging and engaging activities, including obstacle courses, archery, tree-top adventures, and team-building exercises. The night hill trekking stood out as a defining experience, pushing students to demonstrate courage, endurance, and determination under demanding conditions. Beyond adventure, the journey served as a platform for leadership development, unity, and confidence-building. Students returned with unforgettable memories, enhanced skills, and a renewed sense of purpose and achievement, that will undoubtedly add value to their growth personally and professionally moving forward.
