AIUB is proud to announce that Professor Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna, Member of the Board of Trustees and former Vice Chancellor of the American International University - Bangladesh (AIUB), has been appointed as a Member of the Governing Council of the Magna Charta Observatory (MCO) for a four-year term beginning 13 November 2025. This prestigious recognition reflects both her lifelong commitment to empowering higher education and AIUB’s deep engagement with global academic values and initiatives.

The Magna Charta Observatory, established in 1988 in Bologna, Italy, is the global guardian of fundamental university values, academic freedom, institutional autonomy, integrity, responsibility, and service to society. More than 950 universities from over 90 countries have signed the Magna Charta Universitatum, affirming their commitment to these shared principles.

AIUB is a proud signatory of the Magna Charta Universitatum 2020, reinforcing its dedication to responsible and ethical higher education. The University is also an active member of the “Responsive and Responsible University” Project, an international collaborative initiative under the MCO framework that advances institutional integrity, sustainability, and accountability. Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna serves as the Project Lead for AIUB, guiding its contributions to the global movement for transformative higher education.

Professor Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna has long been recognized as one of the most influential figures in higher education in Asia and beyond. As AIUB’s Vice Chancellor for more than three decades, she led a remarkable journey, expanding the university from only 70 students in its early years to a vibrant community of over 15,000 learners across five dynamic faculties. Her leadership transformed AIUB into one of Bangladesh’s most respected private universities, known for its academic rigor, innovation, and commitment to quality.

She has also played significant roles in global academic communities, including serving as Treasurer and Executive Committee Member of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), Administrative Board Member of the International Association of Universities (IAU), and becoming the first female President of the Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific (AUAP). Her contributions have been widely recognized, earning numerous prestigious awards and distinctions for leadership, service, and impact in higher education worldwide.

Dr. Lamagna’s appointment as the Magna Charta Observatory Governing Council member celebrates not only her personal legacy of leadership, resilience, and service, but also AIUB’s growing recognition as a responsible and forward-looking institution within the international academic community.
