AIUB’s MPH Students Shine at Leading Academic Conferences

Events Date:
August 07
Year: 2025
Organized By:
Bangladesh Quality Improvement Convention; ICOPH;
Venue:
Hotel Intercontinental Dhaka; Ambassador Hotel Bangkok, Thailand

Two Master of Public Health (MPH) students from the Department of Public Health, AIUB, presented scientific papers at prestigious academic conferences in August 2025.

Dr. Maryam Sharifi, a foreign student currently enrolled in AIUB’s MPH program, presented a paper at the Bangladesh Quality Improvement Convention on 9 August 2025 at Dhaka’s Hotel Intercontinental. Her presentation, titled “An Analysis of Effective Quality Communication of Healthcare Professionals in Bangladesh as it Relates to Best Practices in the USA”, was co-authored with Dr. Muhammad Wasif Alam, Head of the Department of Public Health. The paper emphasized the importance of integrating communication training into medical education, promoting more egalitarian doctor-patient relationships, and adopting standardized protocols with robust legal safeguards (e.g., informed consent, HIPAA). It also recommended advanced multilingual support systems and patient feedback mechanisms. Drawing lessons from the USA, the study argued that strengthening communication practices can significantly enhance healthcare delivery and patient satisfaction in Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Quality Improvement Convention 2025 served as a national platform bringing together healthcare leaders, policymakers, academics, NGOs, and private-sector partners to advance quality improvement (QI) in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Dr. Asma Ferdowsi, another AIUB MPH student, presented her research at the 11th International Conference on Public Health (ICOPH), held on 7 August 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand. Her paper, titled “Physicians’ Adherence to Guidelines in Hypertension and Type 2 Diabetes Patients’ Prescriptions”, highlighted significant gaps between clinical practice and guideline recommendations, which are likely contributing to suboptimal health outcomes. Dr. Asma was the Principal Author, with Dr. Muhammad Wasif Alam as Co-author, both representing AIUB’s Department of Public Health.

The Department of Public Health at AIUB, through its MPH program, strongly encourages students to disseminate their thesis work through publications and presentations in national and international scientific forums, showcasing their contributions to advancing public health knowledge and practice.
