As part of AIUB Sustainable Futures 2026, two exciting student competitions, the Sustainable Art & Upcycling Competition and the Sustainability Innovation Challenge (Student Poster Competition), provided students with platforms to transform sustainability concepts into creative expressions and practical solutions. In addition, a Moot Court session organized and arranged by AIUB’s law students provided a legal perspective on sustainability, with students examining real sustainability challenges in Bangladesh through the lens of law and legal responsibility. Together, these activities reflected the spirit of the event’s theme, “Be the Change,” by encouraging students to rethink waste, identify sustainability challenges, develop innovative ideas, and explore the legal dimensions of building a more sustainable future.

The Sustainable Art & Upcycling Competition, held on 24 August 2026, challenged students to transform waste, discarded, and recycled materials into creative artworks that communicated meaningful messages about sustainability and the future. Participants were encouraged to use at least 70% reused, recycled, or discarded materials, with submissions taking the form of sculptures, installations, wall-mounted artworks, and other creative expressions. The artworks were displayed at D Building, Level 9, allowing members of the AIUB community to appreciate the creativity and sustainability messages behind each work. The competition was evaluated by a panel of judges based on creativity and originality, use of recycled or discarded materials, sustainability messaging, craftsmanship, and presentation. The judging process resulted in three top placements, including a joint third-place position. “Ocean Has More Plastic Than Fish” secured First Place, followed by “Where Waste Becomes Life” in Second Place, while “Waste to Wonder” and “Fish That Bears Our Mark” jointly received Third Place.

The following day, 25 August 2026, the Sustainability Innovation Challenge, a student poster competition, showcased students’ ability to move from identifying sustainability problems to proposing practical and innovative solutions. The challenge invited teams of four students to address sustainability issues relevant to AIUB or Bangladesh, covering areas such as plastic and waste management, food waste reduction, energy conservation, sustainable transportation, water conservation, sustainable digital practices, and creating a greener campus. Students were required to present the problem, proposed solution, implementation approach, and expected sustainability impact, followed by a three-minute pitch before the judges.

The poster competition received an overwhelming response from the AIUB student community, with 90 submissions. The posters were displayed at D Building, Level 9, on 25 August, creating an engaging exhibition of student-led sustainability ideas. A strong pool of judges evaluated the submissions based on sustainability impact, innovation, feasibility, scalability, and student engagement.

Given the exceptionally high level of participation and the quality and diversity of the ideas presented, the competition recognized 11 winning poster entries. The winning titles were:

1. From Machine Waste to Market

2. AIUB Smart Waste Point

3. Green Points AIUB

4. Transforming Virtual AIUB

5. AIUB Plastic Loop

6. Waste 2 Wear

7. Spatial Machine Learning

8. Eco Sort AI

9. Ecobrush

10. GreenLoop (Carpool)

11. Hydroloop AIUB

Alongside the competitions, a Moot Court session was organized and arranged by AIUB’s law students on 25 August 2026, bringing a legal and policy dimension to the sustainability discussions. Six law students presented six sustainability-related issues relevant to Bangladesh, examining each issue from legal and sustainability perspectives. The topics included river erosion, child marriage, pollution, and the preservation of natural resources, including the Sundarbans. Through their presentations, the students explored the legal implications of these challenges and highlighted how legal frameworks, rights, responsibilities, and enforcement can contribute to addressing sustainability concerns in Bangladesh. The session demonstrated the role of legal education and future legal professionals in understanding and responding to complex environmental and social sustainability challenges. The Moot Court session was held at the AIUB Moot Court Room, providing an appropriate setting for the law students to present and discuss the legal dimensions of sustainability challenges in Bangladesh.

Together, the two competitions and the Moot Court session demonstrated that sustainability can be communicated not only through discussion and awareness, but also through art, innovation, problem-solving, and legal perspectives. From transforming discarded materials into meaningful artworks to proposing technology-enabled and practical solutions for sustainability challenges, and examining sustainability issues through the lens of law, the participants of AIUB Sustainable Futures 2026 showcased creativity, critical thinking, and a strong commitment to becoming changemakers. The enthusiastic participation, thoughtful submissions, and dedicated efforts of the judging panels and student organizers made these activities an integral part of the two-day celebration of sustainability at AIUB.
