A Moot Court Team of American International University – Bangladesh (AIUB) has recently participated in the Sixth Bangladesh National Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition 2022, held from 17th – 19th February 2022. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the competition was held on a virtual platform this year. Jessup Bangladesh organized, and Independent University, Bangladesh hosted, the competition with the support of the U.S. Embassy, through the Department of Justice’s Office of Prosecutorial Development, Assistance, and Training (OPDAT). U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Helen LaFave graced the opening ceremony of the competition and Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Honourable Speaker of Parliament, was the Chief Guest in the closing ceremony.
The Jessup Competition is considered the world's largest and most prestigious moot court competition with the participation of aspiring law students from more than 700 law schools around the world. The competitors have to argue on fictitious legal disputes existing between the countries before the International Court of Justice. The tournament helps aspiring lawyers to develop their oral, research, and presentation skills, which are instrumental for their overall advocacy skills. The competition also enabled the students to forge connections with other law students from across the country, even during the COVID-19 situation.
AIUB team was comprised of four students from the department of law, AIUB namely, Fahmida Prity (18-37893-2), Shehab Shahariar Sajib (18-37865-2), Shamsu Tanvi Sonet Zim (19-40160-1), and Sanjida Sohana (19-40070-1). The team was coached by Mr. Ahasan Habib, Lecturer, department of law, AIUB. After two days of intense competition, the team ranked 10th in the written memorial submission and placed 13th in the overall team ranking out of 24 participating teams from different public and private universities around the country.
