The AIUB Astronomy and Space Science Club (AASSC) successfully organized a day-long workshop titled “Cosmic Spectrum: Where Data Interpretation Meets Telescope Engineering” on 2 July 2026 (Thursday) at the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). The immersive workshop was dedicated to modern astronomy, cosmology, data-driven research, and observational technology. Designed to bridge the gap between astronomical data interpretation and practical telescope engineering, the program enabled participants to understand how raw observational data is transformed into meaningful scientific discoveries. The workshop brought together students, faculty members, researchers, and astronomy enthusiasts for a day of scientific learning, technical training, and hands-on experience.
The workshop was officially inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Saiful Islam, Honorable Vice Chancellor, American International University-Bangladesh. The inaugural ceremony was further graced by the presence of Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman, Pro-Vice Chancellor, AIUB, who delivered an inspiring address highlighting the growing significance of astronomical science and its expanding role in scientific research and technological innovation. Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Siddique Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, also shared his insights and enthusiasm for astronomy, data science, and interdisciplinary research, encouraging participants to explore emerging opportunities in these rapidly evolving fields.
The technical sessions commenced with a presentation titled “NASA Open Data: Unlocking the Universe Through Open Science,” delivered by Mr. Ariful Hasan Opu, President of Bangladesh Innovation Forum and Crew Chief of Space Innovation Camp. He introduced participants to NASA’s publicly accessible astronomical databases and demonstrated how authentic space mission data can be utilized for scientific research, visualization, and discovery. Emphasizing the growing importance of open science, he encouraged participants to explore real-world datasets to strengthen their analytical and research capabilities.
The workshop continued with an insightful scientific lecture titled “Cosmology at the Crossroads: The Hunt for the ‘True’ Hubble Constant (H₀),” presented by Dr. Syed Ashraf Uddin, Associate Professor, Department of Physical Sciences, Independent
University, Bangladesh (IUB), and Core Member of the Center for Astronomy, Space Science and Astrophysics (CASSA). During the session, Dr. Uddin explored one of modern cosmology’s most compelling challenges, the Hubble Tension, explaining why different observational techniques yield conflicting measurements of the Universe’s expansion rate and discussing how resolving this discrepancy could significantly reshape our understanding of cosmology and fundamental physics.
Another key session focused on Astronomical Data Interpretation and Analysis, presented by Dr. Abu Zafar Ziauddin Ahmed, Chairperson of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Primeasia University and Information & Publication Secretary of the Bangladesh Physical Society. His lecture provided participants with practical insights into interpreting astronomical observations, processing scientific datasets, identifying meaningful patterns, and converting raw observational data into scientifically significant conclusions.
The event was continued with an extensive Hands-on Telescope Engineering Workshop conducted by Mr. Bayzid Alam, Technical Engineer and Founder of Bayzid’s Astronomy. Through an interactive practical session, participants learned the fundamentals of telescope engineering, including optical principles, telescope types, mount systems, alignment and calibration techniques, accessories, maintenance, and observational best practices. The session offered valuable hands-on experience in assembling, operating, and optimizing telescopes for astronomical observation.
Following the technical discussions, Prof. Dr. S. A. M. Manzur H. Khan, Proctor of AIUB, expressed sincere appreciation to the keynote speakers in recognition of their valuable contributions and insightful presentations during the program. A token of appreciation was presented to the speakers by Prof. Dr. S.A.M. Manzur H. Khan, Dr. Md. Sarowar Hossain, Assistant Professor, Mentor of AASSC and Mr. Rethwan Faiz, Associate Professor, Mentor of AASSC as a gesture of gratitude.
Last of all, the learning experience culminated in an exciting Night Sky Observation Session, where participants applied the knowledge gained throughout the workshop by observing celestial objects through telescopes under the guidance of the instructors at the AIUB playground. This practical experience enabled attendees to connect theoretical concepts with real-time astronomical observation while strengthening their understanding of observational techniques.
Throughout the event, more than 450 participants from student and faculty pool actively engaged in discussions, technical demonstrations, data analysis exercises, and collaborative learning activities, making the workshop both educational and inspiring. This workshop created a dynamic platform for scientific learning, technical skill development, and collaborative knowledge sharing. By integrating NASA open data, cosmology, astronomical data analysis, telescope engineering, and practical night-sky observation, the workshop reflected the AIUB Astronomy and Space Science Club’s commitment to inspiring curiosity, fostering research excellence, and preparing the next generation of astronomers, engineers, and space science enthusiasts.
