After a brief hiatus, students and staff of the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) came together to celebrate the long awaited Bengali New Year on the 14^th of April 2025! Transforming the beautiful campus with vibrant colors and incredible crafts showcasing the unique Bengali heritage, the AIUB Arts Club (AAC) upheld their tradition this Pohela Boishakh 1432, with the “alpona” road painting across the premises, along with a stall offering hand-made craft items at the fair.

Chalking out the base design and preparing the handicrafts, the enthusiasm of the members was apparent in anticipation of one of the biggest celebrations at not just AIUB, but for Bengalis across the world. Under the guidance of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and the Office of Strategic Communication (OSC), along with the support of other administrative officials, club mentors, club members, and volunteers, the white outlines of the ‘alpona’ were brought to life with the hues of traditional floral and geometric patterns, welcoming the Bengali New Year with unbound joy and cheer. AAC’s own creations of face painting as well as hand-crafted bangles, pottery, greeting cards, key rings, mirrors, decorative fans, customized sunglasses, terracotta plates (‘shoras’) adorned their stall, “Pagla Hawa”. Many gathered there to admire their work and even purchased several items, appreciating their artistic flair and hard work.

Against the cultural musical performances throughout the day, with the all-too familiar sound of the ‘Nagordola’ in the background, and the cultural icons of birds, animals, and locally inspired draperies and decorations throughout the university, the day itself showcased the core Bengali traditions, folklore, and local customs that truly make Pohela Boishakh worth commemorating in all its festivities! And it would not be complete without the efforts and initiatives of AAC and the AIUB community.
