ACES ORGANIZED AN INDUSTRIAL TOUR TO “ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT (AERE)”

On 13th April 2017, AIUB Community of Engineering Students (ACES) organized an industrial tour at Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE) which is located at Ganakbari, Savar, Dhaka. AERE was established on 14 September, 1986. It is a nuclear fuel based power plant with the total capacity of 3MW electric power supply to the national grid. A group of 25 students with 3 faculty members of AIUB visited the institute. The team was led by Prof. Dr. Afroza Shelley (Professor of School of Natural Science (Physics), AIUB), Mr. Tawsif Ibne Alam (Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB) and Mr. Safayet Ahmed (Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB).  The team departed from the FE Building-2 at 9:00 a.m. and reached the power plant at 11:00 a.m.

After a brief introduction by chief scientific officer of the institute, Dr. Md. Idris Ali, the students were taken to the main point of interest, the nuclear reactor facility. Under nuclear science institute, there are 12 different sub-institutes. Students were divided into three groups and were explained the basic knowledge of the nuclear chain reaction, plant description etc. Dr. Mosharraf Hossain Kamal, the chief of isotope production took the students to see the nuclear reactor directly to the reactor room after maintaining safety issues. After that the students were taken to the Institute of Electronics where Schematic diagram, PCB Design, Etching & Fabrication of Portable Radiation Dose Rate Meter, Area Radiation Monitor, Hand and Foot Radiation Monitor, Scintillation Survey Meter etc. are done. After the visit, the students and faculties were taken to the cafeteria and were provided with lunch.

After lunch, the students were taken to the central auditorium and a slide show on future research planning and past researches were presented. Then, the tour guide and instructors of AERE answered various questions of the students. After the presentation session, the AERE authority thanked AIUB for taking such an important initiative for engineering students to make them observe an important sector of renewable energy technology. AIUB Community of Engineering Students (ACES) extended its fervent gratitude to the authority of the AERE for their tremendous support and co-operation. Lastly, the authority and instructors of the tour were given gift hampers as a token of appreciation and hospitality by the faculty members of AIUB. The tour ended with a group photo with all the authorities and the participants. It was an important and successful tour for engineering students who were interested in renewable energy technology.
