A Study Tour to Ashulia Power Station (Summit Power Ltd.)
by the students of “Power Stations” course of EEE Department
The Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) undertook a study tour on 25th of July, 2013 to Ashulia 44.1MW Power Station of Summit Power Ltd., the first independent power producer (IPP) in Bangladesh. Study tour to observe the electricity generation & transmission and power station operation & maintenance are relevant and enrichment activities of the electrical engineering education. This time the tour was organized for the students of Power Stations course and arranged by the course teacher Mr. Taskin Jamal, Lecturer of EEE Dept. in order to introduce the students with the power station operation and maintenance concepts. With the course teacher, another two faculty members Mr. S.M. Ferdous (Lecturer, EEE Dept.) and Ms. Humaira Salmin (Lecturer, EEE Dept.) accompanied 40 enthusiastic students in the tour. On arrival, teachers and students were greeted by the plant manager and plant engineers of the power station. The students were then given introductory speech about the gas engine power station by two plant engineers. They were demonstrated about the working principle of gas engine power station, description of the cycle, financial activities, mechanical system, load factor, operation and maintenance schedule, electricity supply system, plant safety etc. The students were divided into two groups and were then taken to visit the gas engine rooms, switching yard, gas yard, control room, radiator on the rooftop etc. places. The students got a practical idea about the working principle of a gas engine power station. It was a good learning experience for them to see the actual management operations too. The study tour contributed greatly to the students, reflected in their participations during the lecture-discussion session and their queries during the demonstration. Prof. Dr. ABM Siddique Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Mr. Rinku Basak, Assistant Professor and Head (Graduate Level), Dept. of EEE provided their continuous support for the arrangement of the tour. The Department of EEE extends its profound thanks to the Ashulia Plant Manager Engr. Ali Ahsan, Plant Engineer Ahsanul Habib and Engineer Jakaria Talukder of Summit Power Ltd. for their support & hospitality and AIUB administration for providing the administrative support as always.
