A Stage of Immense Possibility: Intra-Department Drama Competition Organized by the Department of English

Where experience brings excellence, innocence brings an unfettered joy - talking about the delight of watching a bunch of amateur but highly enthusiastic souls trying their best to play characters that spring straight out of the books or stories they normally study for exam purpose. The occasion was an intra-department drama competition, organized by the cultural sub-committee of Department of English, AIUB on 25 July 2019 at its Multi-Purpose Hall. After months-long rehearsal, three groups put up a tough fight to win the champion’s position. Under the supervision of their teachers, the groups enacted dramatizations of Katherine Mansfield’s famous short story “A Garden Party”, James Joyce’s short story “Eveline”, and finally the longstanding yet never worn-out Greek myth about the “Apple of Discord”. Followed by a welcome speech by the departmental head Mr. M Hamidul Haque, the competition started, and kept the audience captivated for the whole time. The youngsters made us empathize with Eveline, share the indescribable sorrow that little Laura felt, and finally delve into the story of Paris choosing the goddess Aphrodite as the most beautiful woman, and hence instigating the fall of Troy. The brilliance and attention-to-detail, with which the “Apple of Discord” team staged the drama, brought them the champion’s award. The event was complete with the presence of the honorable Head of Academics and Dean of Faculty of Business Administration Prof. Dr. Charles C. Villanueva and the honorable Dean of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Tazul Islam. The department keeps up to its promise of coming up with cultural programs in every semester, and the drama competition has been another feather in the crown.
