Abstract
Urbanization profoundly affects natural landscapes, including significant impacts on riverbank erosion. Urbanization frequently results in the expansion of impervious surfaces like roads and buildings, which reduces natural water infiltration and increases surface runoff. Furthermore, removing natural vegetation for urban expansion weakens riverbanks by disrupting the root systems that typically help stabilize the soil. This disruption of the hydrological cycle leads to greater water volumes and velocities flowing into rivers, thereby accelerating erosion processes. The loss of riparian buffers further exposes riverbanks to erosive forces, increasing sediment load in rivers and causing the degradation of aquatic habitats. This research investigates the complex relationship between urban expansion and river erosion dynamics through a comprehensive statistical analysis focusing on how land use, stormwater management, and vegetation cover changes contribute to this process. We employed a statistical analysis where the findings indicate that urbanization significantly increases the risk and severity of riverbank erosion, necessitating the implementation of sustainable urban planning and engineering solutions. This research underscores the importance of integrating ecological considerations into urban development to mitigate the negative impacts on river systems and preserve the ecological integrity of waterways.
