Policy Frameworks for Integrating Circularity in Bangladesh’s Agri-Food Systems

Abstract

Bangladesh is an agricultural country, so it’s agriculture and food system is related to food security, employment and also in its economy.The production and consumption is following linear patterns which have led to resource inefficiency, food loss and produce wastage. Integrating circular economy principles into agriculture and food policy frameworks offers a more sustainable and efficient system. The research explores the existing policy and governance frameworks influencing circularity in Bangladesh’s Agri-food system and to identify key policy opportunities for integrating circular practices that enhance sustainability and resource efficiency. The methodology we used is a combination of quantitative policy content analysis with secondary data. We analyzed 30 years of data containing soil quality, water sustainability, climate resilience, biodiversity, food security. We used Excel to make a graph chart of our data. The graph shows that the soil quality of Bangladesh was increasing from from 1994 to 1996 and reached about 98%, But it decreased around 2005 to 2007 which was around 40% , recently in 2022 the percentage reached at 98%. The water sustainability score often fluctuates but it reached around 90% in 2008 and also in 2016. The climate resilience score fluctuates between 40% to 90%. It reached it’s highest point in 2003 which was around 90%.The biodiversity score was in it’s lowest point in 2006 which was 40% and reached 85% in 2006. The food security score was around 70% to 90% range and reached its highest point in 2003. The analysis shows that there is a relationship between the food security index and the climate resilience index because they fluctuate together. The research show the problem of linear model in Bangladesh’s agri-food systems and what will improve if we integrate circularity.
