Abstract

Air pollution has become a critical environmental and public health issue in Bangladesh, especially in urban areas where traffic jam, industrial emissions, and construction activities are the major contamination sources. Although the countryside is also polluted, densely populated cities are in the worst situation because of the growing size of the population and extremely high levels of pollution. This study investigates the root causes of air contamination, its negative effects on the public, and measures to mitigate the problem based on a public survey and government and online sources. The topics of the survey were people's destinations, transportation choices, knowledge of urban air pollution, and sicknesses caused by it. The examination showed increased numbers of diseases like chronic cough, allergies, and difficulty in breathing due to higher air pollution levels, which occurred in the winter season. Most people know about pollution, but few know how to protect themselves, or how they can avoid their personal contribution to the problem. The main air pollution sources that were pointed out by the public were car exhausts, industrial fumes, the operation of brick kilns, open burning of waste, and dust from construction. The respondents proposed the green methods, such as more trees in urban areas, better public transport, more frequent checks of the legal system and the campaigns of general knowledge that can improve the situation of the pollution. The work not only talks about the gravity of air pollution in Bangladesh but also brings the step-by-step resolutions in regard to different local situations. Presentation of the data to the public and policymakers is made through the simplest of graphics such as pie charts and bar graphs to ensure that maximum clarity is obtained. The purpose of the research is to have the public more informed and be a driving factor of necessary policy changes that aim at fighting air pollution effectively, this way enhancing a cleaner, healthier and sustainable environment for all citizens. It is by acknowledging and acting based on public concerns and real interventions that the author expects this work to be the starting point in the achievement of dust-free air in Bangladesh.
