Abstract

In Bangladesh, thalassemia is a significant public health concern that is characterized by disparities in testing procedures and knowledge between urban and rural populations. The current study investigates these gaps using data from the 2024 National Thalassemia Survey, with a focus on the condition's accessibility and understanding. Research shows that just 5.4% of people in rural areas and 2.8% of those in cities have ever had a Thalassemia test. Although the rural demographic demonstrates slightly higher testing rates, the degree of knowledge continues to be horribly low nationally, as indicated by 33.6% of rural and barely 15.0% of urban people showing identification of the illness. The statistical analysis reveals an 18.6% variations in awareness that is suitable to rural populations, whereas the testing disparity indicates that rural people are 2.6% more likely to have undergone testing. These trends highlight systemic gaps, which might come from differences in healthcare facilities, socioeconomic circumstances, and the success of health education programs. The results need urgent actions to fix these gaps. Specific health initiatives have to focus on increasing awareness within urban surroundings, enhancing access to testing in both rural and urban places, and improving public health policies to address the healthcare delivery gaps. This study gives substantial insight for policymakers and medical professionals to create more fair and effective policies for the prevention and treatment of Thalassemia, ultimately achieving better health outcomes for all demographic groups in Bangladesh.
