On 22nd April 2024, AIUB-IQAC participated in a virtual meeting with International Association of Universities (IAU)’s Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development (HESD) Cluster Network on SDG 5: Gender Equality.
IAU is an international non-governmental organization and an official partner of UNESCO that recognizes the key role higher education (HE) plays in the overall process of achieving sustainable development. Currently, IAU has 600 Members (Institutions, Organizations, Affiliates and Associates) from over 120 countries. Since its creation in 2018, IAU’s thematic Cluster on higher education and research for sustainable development (HESD) is mobilizing higher education institutions around the UN 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Cluster is composed of 16 lead Institutions, each championing and working on one specific SDG while at the same time linking it to other relevant SDGs, with additional Institutions invited on board as ‘Satellites’ around each SDG. Currently, around 70 universities (leads and subclusters) are engaged in the Cluster. AIUB serves as a Satellite University in SDG 5: Gender Equality and SDG 11: Sustainable cities & communities within the IAU-HESD framework.
IAU and the University of Bologna, the Cluster Lead for SDG 5, organized the virtual meeting. Along with AIUB, representatives from Malmö University, Sweden; Open University of Catalonia, Spain; Tsukuba University, Japan; Assam Don Bosco University, India; University of Vechta, Germany; UNESP, Sao Paulo; Pontifical Catholic University, Peru; participated and shared their actions and insights regarding gender equality in their respective institutions. From AIUB, Dr. Farheen Hassan, Professor, Faculty of Business Administration, outlined the strategies undertaken by AIUB on attaining SDG 5 goals. Members of the AIUB-IQAC team, Mr. Md. Imranul Haque, Mr. Pronoy Anthony, Ms. Susmita Ghosh, and Ms, Nazia Farhana, attended the meeting.
At the end of the meeting participants vowed to continue supporting these efforts in the Cluster with a focus on sharing best practices and advocacy.
