The Department of Economics has successfully organized another session of the Economics Brown Bag Seminar Series titled “Does Land Ownership Really Empower Poor Women Economically? Evidence from Rural Bangladesh.” The seminar took place on 22nd December (Monday) at 4:30 PM at the FASS Meeting Room (Annex 4, Level 1).

The session was presented by Dr. Kazi Tanvir Mahmud, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, AIUB. In his presentation, Dr. Mahmud examined the relationship between land ownership and women’s economic empowerment in rural Bangladesh using empirical evidence. He highlighted how ownership of land can influence women’s income generation, decision-making power, access to resources, and overall socio-economic status. The discussion also addressed policy implications and the challenges faced by poor women in securing land rights in rural settings.

The Economics Brown Bag Seminar Series is a flagship academic initiative of the Department of Economics, AIUB, designed to promote a strong research culture and provide an interactive platform for faculty members, researchers, and students to exchange ideas and share contemporary research findings. The seminar encouraged active participation, with engaging discussions and insightful questions from the audience.

The seminar was graced by the presence of Prof. Dr. Tazul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). The event was attended by the respected faculty members from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and representatives from BIDS, making the session a productive and intellectually stimulating experience for all participants.
