Talk Show on “Individual Taxation: An Assessment of Finance Act 2011”

Prologue:
Department of Accounting, Faculty of Business Administration of American International University – Bangladesh (AIUB) has organized a Talk Show on “Individual Taxation: An Assessment of Finance Act 2011”on 13th October, 2011 in the AIUB Auditorium at 3:00 p.m.  The program started with a rousing message from the Dean of Faculty of Business Administration, Dr. Charles C. Villanueva. A good number of faculty members from the Department of Accounting and Finance were also present on that occasion in the auditorium. Introduction of the Discussants:
Nikhil Chandra Shil is working as an assistant professor in the Department of Accounting of American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). He is an associate member of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh. He has several publications in the area of direct and indirect taxation in various local and international academic journals. He has co-authored a textbook titled “Bangladesh Income tax: Theory and Practice“which is used as a textbook in most of the public and private universities in Bangladesh including professional bodies like ICAB and ICMAB. Mohammad Faridul Alam is working as an assistant professor in the Department of Accounting of American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). He has several publications in the area of income tax; value added tax and non tax revenue in various local and international academic journals. He has co-authored a textbook titled “Bangladesh Income tax: Theory and Practice“which is used as a textbook in most of the public and private universities in Bangladesh including professional bodies like ICAB and ICMAB. Summary of the Show:
The show was designed in such a fashion so that the floor remained open for questions throughout the program. Mr. Md. Zakaria Masud, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Accounting, was the moderator of the show with two very distinctive discussants in the area of taxation, Mr. Nikhil Chandra Shil and Mr. Md. Faridul Alam. The topic of the show was very interesting and resourceful covering various aspects of Bangladesh taxation like, what changes has been introduced by finance act 2011 in the area of individual taxation and it’s expected effects on tax payers’ behavior, government revenue and taxation procedure. They have also focused on the problems associated with the current tax structure of Bangladesh and have pointed out several thoughtful ideas as remedial of the problem areas  with a critical underpinning that raises a welcoming storm among the audiences who were mainly the majoring students in Accounting and Finance. Mr. Shil concluded his speech by requesting people from all over the country to understand the necessity of paying tax so that we can reduce dependency on the tax revenue generated from the town dwellers and on the other hand Mr. Alam said that government could show their appreciation to general taxpayers besides the highest tax payer to promote tax payment by mid level income group. Conclusion:
At the end of the show Dr. Charles C. Villanueva, Dean, Faculty of Business Administration delivered his heartfelt thanks to the guests and the audience for presenting an intellectual and lively session.  Besides, as a sign of gratitude, he has also handed over a certificate of appreciation to the discussants.
